Re: I finally got around to restoring one of my 4x12s
I have to ask......how did you do the top and bottom piping? There's no grooves on that cab, so did you saw them in? How hard was it to do that part? I'm even amazed that you filled in those half moons near the handles! Wow!
Oh yeah....and please post pics of your orange recovered head. I missed that the first time around!
I've retolexed amps before and that stuff is difficult!....especially the rounded corners!
What kind of glue did you use for the flat panels, and did you use stronger glue for the corners?
I suck at the "how to" threads, so a bunch of crap got skipped.
The newer A cabs have those recessed pads up top, but the "vintage" cabs of course don't. I filled those in with wood, and skimmed over with wood filler.
Then I used a 1/8 router bit to create the piping channels. You have to cut the rounded front channel by hand, but it is easier than it sounds. The channel is exactly 1 5/8” from the edge of the cab to the outside edge of the channel. (1/8” wide, and 1/8” deep)
The little “half moon” cut outs had to be dealt with because of the larger metal handle. I have no idea why Marshall simply does not offer the same plastic handle in metal, but Jim from Scumback now offers direct metal replacement handles that drop right in.

I used regular ol’ tolex glue from Mojo, and applied it with a cheap short bristle brush. The corners are the ***** of course, so I do those last. Once I have the cuts correct, I use just a dab of super glue, and then press them into place. Jim shows the way to do them correctly in this thread.

I used real Marshall parts for everything but the casters and the red tolex. Marshall no longer offers correct red levant, but they do have red elephant.
I ordered the red from
http://www.partsisparts.net/products/109/Marshall-Amp-Covering-Red-Levant.htm and it is a dead match for the “real deal”. No one else that I know of carries the correct color red, so if you want actual Marshall red, get it from Parts is Parts.
The casters are the pop in kind (vs screw), and can be bought here
