I finally got around to restoring one of my 4x12s

Well after the Marshall headshell redo, I finally got around to doing my first (of three) 4x12 cabs than need some lovin'.

After reading all those great threads that Jim (Scumback Speakers) has posted up, I figured I could make a go at it. After doing both a headshell, and now a 4x12, I have new found respect for the work that goes into restoring one of these.

I started with a JCM800 era 1960A cab and tried my best to recreate a late '60's cab.

I started with this... (file photo)

Stripped, sanded and most flaws repaired...

The Marshall metal handles are larger that the plastic, and one of the screw holes falls right on the cut out. I had to patch those to create new holes.

I added the long late '60's style baffle brace to add some rigidity. I basically looked at all the pics of old Marshall cabs, and just copied what I saw.

I really wanted to do Marshall purple levant, but it is currently on back order, so I went with red.

First piece!

Getting salt/pepper grill cloth correct is a major pain in the ass (even harder when doing it alone)

Ready for the speakers and back... I am using my blackbacks for this cab.

Thanks for Jim for my endless questions, and always having the info I needed.

*sigh* two more to go...

These kinds of threads are what I consider a forum win! Way more ambition than average!.....and a result that's complete with pics and instant payoff!

Jeez, I can't believe you even went all the way with metal handles, new logos, perfect recovering, and piping! Dammmmm!

Any plans to recover one of your Marshall heads in the same red levant?

Cool restoration, dude. Not doing stuff this major to my Ampeg V412 I have laying around, but I did seal it, ordered new speakers [Eminence, 2x Governor/2x Man O War], jack/plate, and 14AWG speaker wire. I also put a screw threw the center of the back, connecting to the center beam. Should be an awesome companion for my Randall RS412LB with the Eminence Super V's, and my Fryette Sig:X whenever it decides to show up.

Red's really not my color but that job is top-notch indeed. WTG with the metal handles. Plastic is so lame. Two more eh? Post 'em proud when the time comes!

That's pretty boss man!

How long did that take to do?

I stripped the cab in about an hour, and then the raw cab sat for a couple months while I did the orange headshell.

Once I focused on the cab, I knocked out the rest over a couple days. Now that I have done a 4x12, I think I could do another start to finish in 2-3 days. Depending on what all has to be repaired, filler and glue sometimes has to dry overnight, so that is really the X factor.
