I got my mesa and my explorer

Re: I got my mesa and my explorer

I don't know what the hell people are talking about here! I love a split JB/59...

Re: I got my mesa and my explorer

Well, lowering the pickup didn't do anything. I guess I'm gonna bring it in somewhere and have it looked at. My SG with the Duncan Custom sounds pretty swell through it. Kinda my luck but something is weird with the wiring in my SG though, the bridge pickup output sometimes cuts and even if it's on dirty it'll sound nearly clean-it hardly ever happens though. But anyways I might get the Custom in the Explorer if that'd solve the problem. My amp was really noisy at practice today in general though, this was through my SG so maybe it was just that. I don't know, it seems all of my stuff is kinda crapping out on me. I almost feel like I should bring everything in and have it all looked at. :dunno:

I don't like the '59/JB combo either, too much of a different voicing in the pickups.
I found Eq' ing very difficult, either the JB sounded too trebly (or should I say high-middy?) or the '59 sounded to dark and muddy.
That is pretty much the experience I've had with that combo.
What's the secret?

Venturing a little further off-topic for one more post......

As for the '59/JB combo, I normally don't use a ton of gain with my amps, just enough to break up nicely. Think old Billy Gibbons - ZZ Top, and maybe a little Angus Young. I peg the guitar's tone controls, and keep the treble low on the amp - around 2 or 3, the mid at about halfway or a little more, and the low at around 7. I like to push the JB, so I keep the volume on the guitar pretty high. I set the '59 neck's volume control at about 3/4, so that when I switch to it, it'll be cleaner, and more open sounding. That's about it. The combo really worked well for me and my Country, Blues, and Classic Rock type stuff. My amps were a Fender Blues Deluxe, a Yamaha T50 combo (the early-90's Soldano-designed one), and later, the Hot Rod DeVille.

When I chose new pickups for my '91 LP Classic, I just went with '59's in both positions. I'm still getting used to them, but so far, so good. I'm mostly playing straight-up Blues through the Fender Super-Amp now though.
