I HATE every single one of you who...

...told me that the Gibson SG I got would become my number one, when I bought it as a backup to my PRS CE24.

It makes no sense at all. The PRS is a better guitar in every way except one : when I plug the SG into the Mesa Stiletto, something happens. I don't know what it is, but it happens.

It's not as easy to play, not as balanced, the neck profile is not as good as the PRS, and the controls are not as easy to access. Even the sustain is not as good. It has no coil tap. It has no trem, or locking tuners. But... it just gets ''those'' tones. The ones that make you smile when you hear them. The crushing ones that just create a wall of sound. I picked this SG out of many, many after many months of searching, and it's just alive.

She's like that girl with who you fight with constantly, but get angry make up sex with when it's all over. It's a constant fight, but that makes it so much more interesting.

It's even at the point where that black nitro finish is starting to look more rock-star than the matheo blue with natural binding.

For some reason, the PRS and I have a love affair, because she's the sweet nice girl who you introduce to your parents. The SG is the freak that does things that make a pornstar blush. And right now, I kind of dig that in the context of my rock band.

To resume, the PRS dominates my studio work, but the Gibson is probably gonna end up being my stage guitar.

So yeah, you all suck. I hate you all.

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

...just wait till you find a nice Tele!

Had telecasters before. They do nothing for me, even if I find the best one I can get my hands on after months of searching. Totally not a tele or strat guy, I can tell you that much. I NEED humbuckers. Seems like I'm really digging set necks also, lol.

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

Just a fact of guitardom.

A really good SG can drop a mushroom bruise on most other guitars regardless of price or pedigree.

No explaining it. Just accept it.

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

the opposite has been happening with me, less and less into my SG and more into my mockingbird lately.

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

Gotta love a lil resistance to getting the great sound out of a guitar. Makes it worth the effort when it really sounds right.

I'm starting to. For the longest time I really wasn't a gibson guy, but all I ever played was Les Pauls. I was never a fan, but SGs on the other hand cut in a way that LPs don't, and just have that raw tone that just seems to work.

I am thinking of giving it a few mods though. I might drop a 59n + C5 in there, and convert it to a single volume+tone with coil tap. That layout just feels more natural to me. We'll see though, because I'm afraid of killing the mojo.

Mine seem to - even the "cheap" ones. :scratchch

Mine does also, don't get me wrong. It's still the most natural, most resonant and smooth guitar I have ever played. It gives me tones that are to die for, with precision, control and sustain.

It just doesn't get me to really push out that emotion and "rawness" in my playing that makes live performance what it is.

This is the reason Adam's post count doesn't nearly represent his contribution count. What a great post...

To be honest this entire thread contributes nothing at all to the collective knowledge, lol. Kinda knew that as I was writing it out. Just more interesting since it's the reaction I got when I bought the SG.

Adam is right though. Hardcore mushroom bruises.

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

There's a reason Gibson maintains a strong following despite their 'poor quality control' or whatever it is people ***** about.

The truth is that those who're inspecting their guitars for minor finish flaws are missing the point... guitars is for playin', so quit lookin' at it.

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

Some guitars have 'it' some don't.
My old explorer was a great guitar in many ways but I just got tired of fighting it.
I used to come back from gigs with bruises, it was hard work to play but it rocked.
I keep looking at PRS's and they just look so darn good.
You know they'll play real nice and the tone will be sweet... but I just can't help thing that they miss a certain something... I just don't know what yet :)

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

Most guitars have "it".....it just depends on who has it in their hands and how they perceive it.

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

I never would have said that. In fact, I would also never say that a righteous Les Paul could be replaced by a PRS....

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

I can totally relate to this thread!
My Gibson SG is just like that, sometimes hard to handle but pure magic...

Plays like butter, sounds like thunder. Just like we all want our women to be in bed ;)

If it sounds good now, why change the pickups?

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

the OP basically sums up my feelings for PRS except i came from the outside in.

After years of getting killer sound out of Fenders and Gibsons, then trying a PRS because it's "supposed" to be better...well, i currently have two Gibsons and three Fenders and sold my PRS after less than a month of ownership...

PRS guitars, and some other high-end cats like Suhr, are totally wasted on me. They're mathematically flawless and perfect and completely lack the kind of ugliness I need to make music my way.
