I Hate V's, So Why Am I Drawn To This One?

Re: I Hate V's, So Why Am I Drawn To This One?

I'd put a red tort guard on that... sweet.

Re: I Hate V's, So Why Am I Drawn To This One?

V's allways were too neck heavy. I love pointies but wanted somthing that ballanced better on a strap. I sold off all my V's but kept a couple of my Carvin X220's.
Here I am at the 05 South Eastern Carvin bash with my Sapphire Blue Flame Ultra V

that carvin is nice! looks like a jackson that i really liked. i don't know what it is, but V's seem to sound a bit different. i would figure as light as they are they would be bright, but not so apparently. i wonder if the shape of a guitar affects the tone to an audible degree - besides the obvious difference in the amount of wood from one body to the next and such.

Re: I Hate V's, So Why Am I Drawn To This One?

i've always hated flying v guitars. if anything ever came close to something i MIGHT like, it would have been the randy rhodes jackson v that costs like $3000. now there's this friggin gibson flying v.

i don't know what it is, but i played it once and since i keep thinking about it. i hate the guitar, but oh man did it play awesome and sound awesome. the one i saw looked like this with an ebony fretboard and it was only like $900

It means you're finally coming to your senses... but god that thing is ugly.

Re: I Hate V's, So Why Am I Drawn To This One?

I've never found Vs unbalanced at all, unless you have an older style location for the strap pins (on the side instead of at the back of the heel and/or way back towards the tip on the top fin). Current Gibson Vs blance beautifully IME, and my old Faded at around 6 pounds was prolly the most comfy guitar I've ever owned.

I love Vs. I think the 58 style looks better, but the 67 style is more comfy (plus I prefer TOM vs. a string through). Along with SGs, I also think V's are the most "vocal" and expressive instruments Gibson makes (having pretty much owned them all :laugh2: )

Re: I Hate V's, So Why Am I Drawn To This One?

I like King Vs and Rhoads..Flying V is too round for my tastes...But a cool guitar ofcourse!
Did you see the Annihilator V ?Gibson makes a signature for Waters..Great guitar!

Re: I Hate V's, So Why Am I Drawn To This One?

I love Gibson Vs and Explorers... those are really the only gibsons I like! Most every other company gets something wrong with them! They may look, play and sound great, but you cannot beat the classic Gibson Modern look! Plus most of the Explorers and Vs are not that badly priced... and come with the 500T, which I actually like!

Re: I Hate V's, So Why Am I Drawn To This One?

I used to like white Flying Vs (and owned a Vantage copy), but there are too many outright bozo European Power Metal acts ruining it for me.

These days I first drifted to white Explorers, and now natural/cherry Explorers.

The Carvins have the strap buttons on the back of the heel and almost in the center of the V tails. They were all neck heavy and would rotate when you let go of the neck if you were not carefull. The Gibsons and Jacksons are pretty much the same I've owned um all. The X220's were just the Carvin Ultra V with upper horns added and ballance MUCH better on a strap than the V's do. They play exactly alike, have the same upper fret access, being poplar bodies with a Maple neck through the bodies are SUPER light weight and use the same cases. These are super rare guitars and will blow the doors off the new V220 reissues IMO.
Now that Carvin has reissued the Ultra and the V220's you guys may want to take a hard look at those. More options and MUCH MUCH MUCH better workmanship and materials will be seen on the Carvins as compared to the Gibsons!!! That + the Carvins being priced slightly less on the standard models.

This V was just announced today as the next Dean Owners Open House guitar. Deposit on #28/50 has been placed. Check Dean Forum for info.

Re: I Hate V's, So Why Am I Drawn To This One?

I always liked Ibanez Rocket Roll II's and pretty much all of the Jackson V's. Specially the Rhoads.

Re: I Hate V's, So Why Am I Drawn To This One?

maybe that's a good thing because one day i might have a hall of guitars to walk through and a room full of amps to play one. hell, i might even have my own friggin recording studio. i love guitars and guitar equipment. i like to play different stuff all the time. when i'm at work, all i think about is playing guitar. sooner or later that's all i'll do. what a great life that is for me to look forward to

Amen to that!!!

Not my experience at all with a current gibsons strap placement. Must be our differnece in build or something. I Find Gibson's V's extremely well balanced.

It's a good thing thats not a Z or ML, otherwise there'd would be another $600 or so down the tubes :laugh2:

Re: I Hate V's, So Why Am I Drawn To This One?

Q: Why do you dig that V?

A: You found the needle in the haystack, the one production Gibson less than $1,000,000 that they make each year that doesn't play and sound like arse. It's like winning the lottery.

For a new member, you're wise beyond your years :fing2:

People think Gibson releases a lot of good instruments, I think if more people played them in stores they'd have a far different opinion (and this coming from a Firebird V owner that happened to find one that was good :D)

Re: I Hate V's, So Why Am I Drawn To This One?

Korean made Dean V's and ML's are made better than most production Gibson V's and Explorers. Sure I prefer the Gibsons, but play new ones side by side and the Dean is the better

Re: I Hate V's, So Why Am I Drawn To This One?

I want a Korina V. Truthfully I doubt I will ever have one.
You cant play them sitting down you know.

Re: I Hate V's, So Why Am I Drawn To This One?

That looks awesome! Can the pickguard be taken off, or will that render the control panel useless? If you could take the pickguard off, that guitar would look awesome. Or... since it's black, if you put a mirror pickguard on it, you can do the "Lynott/Sykes" thing but with a Flying V!
you meen mike amott ESP V? copy-er

Sitting while playing a V.

Your comfort may vary......

1. Sit on edge of chair, couch, or your choice but NOT floor....
2. Place upper wing over thigh while placing guitar between your legs and the V part goes against you right inner thigh.....
3. Spread legs slightly...
4. Allow lower body edge to rest on left inner thigh...
5. Strum.......

YCMV :approve: :cool2:
