I have 2 magnets, 1 marked extensively, the other not. help. please

Hi,
I have 2 magnets, 1 duncan that I marked as I took it out: which side is baseplate(down)/which side is facing away from guitar(up). Also marked which side faces screws. There is a blue mark on the edge facing slugs(north, i think) and this mark is on the edge that is NOT close to bobbin wires(no wires in marked edge where i pulled it out.
I bought an A5 mag that has mark on one side in the middle of the edge(also assuming this side is north). But using the opposite attract-like pushes away rule, dose not match the web examples of how to install polarity.
I know there was a thread about mags & orientation, but it was over my head. Hear is the problem: the tutorials say as you take the mag out make sure the next mag going in sticks(attracted). If I do that, the marks no longer face the SAME direction. I hope you see my problem. I have no meters or compasses nor can I get any(can't travel due to spinal defects). There must be a way to figure it out with the marked mag.
All my guitars are together, so I don't want to test it in the guitar, it does hurt me to take things apart.
Steve-thanks

Take the one you know is marked correctly, and bring the new mag next to the old mag's screw side. Orient it so they repel, then you know they're the same polarity; then mark it just like the original.

To Lemonman,
Thanks for replying, frankly, I didn't think anyone would respond to such a newbie question. I can wire a strat, gibson L.P., but when it comes to something that should be obvious, sometimes things come up you have never dealt with before.
Thanks again,
Steven John Buffington

Once you know the polarity of both mags, install'em so the north side is facing the slug bobbin.

Done!

I bought a used pickup that came with a spair mag. He said it's an A5 but it has no markings, it is ground smooth. How do I tell what mag it actually is?

You can't tell an alnico grade from another by sight. You have to look at the magnetic strength with a gauss meter or rule by thumb methode with an iron front called the fridge test. Stick it to fridge and peel it off. The more strength you need the higher the grade. :cool2:

Speaking of magnetic polarity can someone confirm that this graphic is generally incorrect because it shows the screw heads as north:

There are a few p'up makers using this scheme, but the de facto "standard" IS North Slug, South Screw, set by the PAF production p'up in 1957.

Just look at the picture:

Hi.
I have a related question.
So if you rotate the magnet N to S.The pickup will become reverse polarity, right? How do you make it reverse wound?
What would be the wires on a 4 conductor SD. I have a problem with my install for PATB-3.notch 4 sunds thin. Can I just reverse the magnet?
Thanks!

Sorry, by reverse wound I mean when I switch to pos 4-splitting the humbucker.
