I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing...

...but when has that stopped me? :D

After the headstock painting, I was itching to try something more adventurous. I have read plenty about DIY painting and some of those of course look like they came out great. I had an old KnE dinky body that I matted up with a neck to test out pickups. I ended up keeping a JB in it and now use it regularly. I figured it was a good candidate in case this goes terribly wrong.

Originally I wiped on a couple of coats of Minwax Tung Oil Finish, which is a polymer versus a true Tung Oil. I didn't bother to deal with the dings or flaws. Just taped it up started spraying sanding sealer.

Remember kids; lacquer is very bad for you. Wear a proper mask

Whoa, hello handsome, come here often?

Our chosen products in order of application

The sealer and clear are lacquer, but the base and glitter are considered an enamel. I tried to get a better understanding of how close each product was to it's claimed formula so I could determine compatibility. I received enough "it should work" responses to boost my confidence, so cross your fingers.

I choose a silver metallic base because most professional glitter flake jobs have a black or silver base, but in hindsight, a color matched base may be the better option for the rattle can crowd.

*EDIT* The silver base I used is not really bonding with the top coats. I should have used a regular lacquer base for better adhesion. I don't want someone to follow what I did here and have the same outcome.

I knew I would have to really lay on the clear to get the result I hoped for, so I tried to keep everything else as thin as possible. The two sealer coats got sanded out, and then two passes of the silver.

After two moderate glitter coats

And three more

I went thru two cans of glitter spray and still have some light spots to tweak. This is why I think a color matched base might work better, but this is all being made up as I go along.

I will be blowing on the clear over the next few days and then polish.

Wish me luck! :fingersx:

Nice work. Those aren't the proper cartridges for vapor. I'm thinking for my next color job, I'm gonna use resin instead of lacquer for clear so it'll go on thick and I can sand the crap out of it without sanding thru. Good idea taping up the neck joint.

In all seriousness, I would use goggles, the eyes are a very vulnerable entry point for toxins...the fine mist of the toxic lacquer is especially conducive to rapid absorbing through the eyes around the spectacles.

That's exactly what I would do. Minus the mask....

Which all reminds me I have a test to conduct for a project.

Doesn't pulling your shirt over your nose work anymore?

2097 will grab everything down to 3 microns (that’s 99.9% of all airborne contaminants) and keep it out of your lungs. The 2097 also has a thin layer of charcoal to absorb low-level odors.

Should I decide to do this painting thing more often, I will get a pair of 6006

That is looking awesome!! Love the unique color!! Even though it wasnt very masculine, I loved that metallic pink color Charvel used back on the model series. Whatcha doing Trem wise?

Cool info! Ive got a body Ive considered painting, just wondering if its going to be worth the work to strip it.
If I do, learned much here. I always thought I could just paint it.. didnt think of all these steps

Wow, that is one awesome color! Great job!

They're particulate filters, not vapor filters.

There is an organic vapor barrier in the 2097. No, not ideal for heavy painting, but what I have on hand.

Or....stay with me here...
Black sparkle with copper hardware...

That would be awesome actually. I do have something in the queue that will have brass hardware. Still haven’t decided on a finish however

It has been said that trying to capture a sparkle finish on film is difficult, and that is correct. The pics look dull so far, but in the sunlight, it just jumps.

Many more passes to go
