...but when has that stopped me?
After the headstock painting, I was itching to try something more adventurous. I have read plenty about DIY painting and some of those of course look like they came out great. I had an old KnE dinky body that I matted up with a neck to test out pickups. I ended up keeping a JB in it and now use it regularly. I figured it was a good candidate in case this goes terribly wrong.
Originally I wiped on a couple of coats of Minwax Tung Oil Finish, which is a polymer versus a true Tung Oil. I didn't bother to deal with the dings or flaws. Just taped it up started spraying sanding sealer.

Remember kids; lacquer is very bad for you. Wear a proper mask
Whoa, hello handsome, come here often?

Our chosen products in order of application

The sealer and clear are lacquer, but the base and glitter are considered an enamel. I tried to get a better understanding of how close each product was to it's claimed formula so I could determine compatibility. I received enough "it should work" responses to boost my confidence, so cross your fingers.
I choose a silver metallic base because most professional glitter flake jobs have a black or silver base, but in hindsight, a color matched base may be the better option for the rattle can crowd.
*EDIT* The silver base I used is not really bonding with the top coats. I should have used a regular lacquer base for better adhesion. I don't want someone to follow what I did here and have the same outcome.
I knew I would have to really lay on the clear to get the result I hoped for, so I tried to keep everything else as thin as possible. The two sealer coats got sanded out, and then two passes of the silver.

After two moderate glitter coats

And three more

I went thru two cans of glitter spray and still have some light spots to tweak. This is why I think a color matched base might work better, but this is all being made up as I go along.
I will be blowing on the clear over the next few days and then polish.
Wish me luck! :fingersx:
