I have an idea for a youtube series.

Re: I have an idea for a youtube series.

I'm seriously impressed that you got 6 entire pages out of this craziness, of course it took 2 threads but kudos!!! That said I really can't see anyone paying the shipping to mail you something that they can just as easily throw away? But hay, I've seen go fund me accounts under the pretext "help me get my new boobs" with several donations in them so who knows?

Hay I will give you $20 to get some new boobs!!!!

Re: I have an idea for a youtube series.

I will give him some pedals if he personally comes to pick them up.

If he shows up at your door, in addition to a free pedal, you are obligated to put him up for the weekend before you send him back.

Re: I have an idea for a youtube series.

I actually have a distortion pedal I haven't used in almost 10 years, like new condition. Washburn Scott Ian Bad Dog distortion but I don't want to give it to you for free.

Re: I have an idea for a youtube series.

I'd rather save the time of doing research, and just get the pedals and play. I have enough patch cables on hand to make a small board.

And you think you are going to get free stuff to do a YouTube review when you are saying you are lazy?

I could, but then there is the problem of a decent camera angle to record said reviews.

So why would you get free pedals to do a YouTube review when you can't review them?

I have a better microphone so I can put my amp up on the table and record said tones with a picture put in of what pedal I'm demoing.

So you are not doing a good YouTube review...this is more of a SoundCloud type of review

This is just like those e-mails from Nigerian princes who need $1,000 sent over in order to wire $100,000,000 to some lucky American.

Re: I have an idea for a youtube series.

Let me put my money where my mouth is - Nathan, if you buy yourself an SM57, a cheap interface like a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, and you start recording with the proper equipment, then I will actually send you a pedal that you can mess around with. It wouldn't even be hard; all you would have to do is put the SM57 2" directly on the cone of one of the Valvestate's speakers, plug the mic into the 2i2, track it on something like Reaper without EQ or any plugins, and it'll sound good enough (as a base tone for people to reference). I'll keep my word if you do your part.

Re: I have an idea for a youtube series.

I'll certainly chase down a used SM57, a Scarlett interface of some kind. Are the scarletts compatible with windows?

Yep, and they're USB interfaces so you shouldn't have much difficulty getting it working. They also make an even cheaper single-input version of the 2i2, but I'd recommend having at least 2. The reason is so you can have a dual mic setup if you ever get into slightly more advanced techniques. Things like 2 SM57's on different parts of a speaker, or close miking with one mic and room-miking with another microphone (like a condenser or ribbon) set up farther away from the amp to capture more of the overall sound.

Cool. Do you know what a cheap scarlett interface would retail for? Sadly my recording PC died

Why don't you look it up? MA is being really kind reaching out and helping you out here. Whether you think so or not, it's contemptuous to be lazy and not work with him back a little by looking it up yourself, he's given you so much to work with. Unbelievable.

How does the USB compare with Firewire, when using more than 2 inputs? I am thinking about getting the 18i20.

Re: I have an idea for a youtube series.

I would stick with USB, with new USB 3.0 interfaces more than 2 inputs shouldn't be a problem. Firewire is dying, if not already dead and Thunderbolt will be the next step, I don't see USB going anywhere for quite a while though.

Also, if you are running Firewire on a PC, it can be hit and miss at times, it never really got along great with PCs.

Good to know that Firewire is dying. I was browsing and found this article on Presonus about the advantage of Firewire over USB:
http://support.presonus.com/hc/en-u...d-I-choose-a-FireWire-or-USB-audio-interface-

It seems that Firewire transfer data faster than USB and wins when there are more than 2 inputs involved.

I am deciding between Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 and Steinberg UR824 - both USB based - to replace my EMU sound card.

Do you have any experience with devices with interface and preamp bundled together like these two? Is the preamp really good? I wonder if I need to add a separate mic preamp to compensate for any drawback.

But I need Firewire for my 1st-gen iPod.

Re: I have an idea for a youtube series.

Firewire is faster, there is just more room for compatibility issues. I used a Presonus Firewire rack interface a few years ago (maybe 10 yrs?) and had really good luck with it, but I did have to deal with some issues to run it on a laptop. That Presonus article you linked to is kinda old I think, they are talking about USB 2.0 and 3.0 has been the standard for a while now.

It kinda depends on what your plans are, if you are going to need 32 Inputs and a couple of rack interfaces, then, yeah, I would stick to Firewire.

If you are building a home project studio, I would just use USB, easier to run on a lot of different machines and no weird incompatibility issues.

I haven't used either of the interfaces you mentioned, I really don't do much playing or recording now days. Also, I would do more research before just taking my word for stuff, again, I don't use this stuff on a daily basis like I used to.
