I have an idea for a youtube series.

Re: I have an idea for a youtube series.

How does the USB compare with Firewire, when using more than 2 inputs? I am thinking about getting the 18i20.

I actually wouldn't know - the reason I recommended the Scarlett and the USB option is because a) it's a very common (allowing for fair comparisons), basic, inexpensive, and decent sounding starting point and b) the USB because every PC has USB ports, and everyone knows how to plug in a USB device. I use a completely different outdated (PITA) setup - a Yamaha AW4416. It works, and it's my fault if something sounds bad on it, but it's slow/prone to freezing/overly complex and certain functions are severely limited compared to any PC DAW+interface setup. The only reasons I haven't moved over to a PC+interface (yet) is because I've gotten so used to this system that I'd be re-learning *everything* by switching, although I know I'll be switching over to Reaper and some other interface later on once the AW4416 eventually fails/the list of problems becomes too long.

I literally have a Focusrite interface on each of my computers at home -- 2x 2i2's, a Solo, and an 18i20 -- so I can work from any computer in the house with external drives. You cannot go wrong with the 18i20, and if you use the Lightpipe connectors, you have a ton of inputs and outputs. I have a Behringer ADA800 connected to the Lightpip output so I can use all 20 discrete outputs when mixing.

I use a Focusrite firewire Saffire Pro 24 DSP. It is great with multiple inputs, but if the computer goes to sleep after an hour, you have to re-sync it. Other than that, it has been a great interface.

Re: I have an idea for a youtube series.

I have heard nothing but good reviews on Focusrite products. An alternative under consideration is Steinberg UR something. It costs about 20 percent less but I think I am gonna go with Focusrite. Besides the Steinberg uses a wall wart, which I hate.

$20 AUD? Nothing. ff you're getting into serious recording, get ready to start investing in equipment. When it comes to recording, you will get exactly what you put in to it in terms of time and monetary investment. If you are trying to get literally any interface and mic setup - regardless of quality and for as cheap as possible - just so I'll send you a free pedal, then you're missing the entire point. Get an SM57 and decent interface - that will be more than $20, but it'll also be worth more to you than the pedal, which is the reward, not the goal.

I think Nathan gets excited about gear and guitar for the wrong reasons. He wants the gear rather than the sound that it may give him. To him, any piece of gear that he has is good because its something he owns, not necessarily the sound it provides. This is obvious when looking at the fact that he consistently mentions that his speakers or headphones are crap, but would rather get them for free from the garbage than to invest the money into a better set of monitors. At the same time, he also has to justify this stuff as being good quality and better than the gear that people have actually paid for than to admit that he just keeps them around because it's more stuff for him. This is no more prevalent than when someone mentions his mixes are not up to snuff and he says that it sounded good on his crappy speakers.

Send me the $20 for postage and I will send you an 8-input ST Audio/ Hoontec C-Port interface system. It has a card that installs into your computer and a dedicated cable that runs out to the rack-mountable In/Out unit. The first two channels have mic preamps with level controls, the other 6 are line inputs. It is all original and will come in the original packaging. The last driver available for this was for Windows XP, which is available to download online for free (the driver, I mean), I will provide the links to relevant sites.

Did you try to drive it under a semi?

Re: I have an idea for a youtube series.

Send me postage and I will send you an M-Box 2 with original packaging and software (Pro Tools and a bunch of other goodies). It doesn't have it's dongle key thing, but it will work (you can buy the key on Ebay anyway). It can be used with other recording software using 'Asio4All' drivers that can be downloaded for free. That's how I used it with an old version of Logic. Works great, sounds great. It's a USB interface.

I have a new interface and the two I have mentioned are cluttering up my house, I don't need them any more.

I'll accept the M-box but postage money will have to wait until I get paid again next week

Re: I have an idea for a youtube series.

I'm sending used socks too. Really good Yankee used socks. Only, I can't afford to ship them all the way to E Maitland. You'll have to pick them up at Hamilton.

Re: I have an idea for a youtube series.

You're a good man Mr Crusty! You might want to put an expiration date on your goodness or you'll forget about it and get $20 sometime next year and not know what it is for...
