I just bought a recording studio.

I just bought a major recording studio.

Is that perhaps an exaggeration? Forgive me, I rarely indulge in that kind of cheap hype.

Well, I've been saving my tax return for the updated Bassman LTD, but it hasn't come into my store yet. I was growing very frustrated with the quality of the clips I was getting with my $2 computer mic and cheap soundcard, and I reread the "recording tips" thread a couple times.

I jumped the gun a little, and ordered a couple cheap preamps, then got some input from Steve_R and GoMano, and one of my old compadres, and started to consider a more long term solution. I know I have a tendency to buy a bunch of cheap crap 'cause it's tempting, then not be totally satisfied, as opposed to those times that I suck it up, and make a quality purchase that holds up over time and reaps a lot of benefits along the way. (Does anyone else do this?)

I like Steve's clips, so I asked him what he used, and he said he just used an old mixer that was versatile, easy to use, and could do double duty, so to speak. I was looking at a moderately priced Mackie mixer with a good preamp for about $400. (Looks like a terrific little mixer, BTW). I went to look at one locally, and realized I would still need a preamp to do any direct recording, so my cost just went up by another $100.

I casually mentioned the new Tascam deck that GoMano told me about that he said was the hit at NAMM - it's a 24-track digital portastudio. ..
"We have those"

Well, I looked at both options and went with the Portastudio. I also added an inexpensive Behringer rackmount tube preamp, and condenser mic. My total came to about the same as the online price of the Tascam alone. :D

I'm just an average guitar player, I know that. Some of you have heard my little clips, and I've heard lots of yours, and I've been inspired to do a lot better. I really can't compete in that area, but what I really want to do is be able to work on songs, and even once in a while write a song with some meaning, whether it's about what's going on in the world, personal heartbreak, love, life's little triumphs, the little things that keep us going, Truth, Redemption ....

I think I have the means now to work on songs for the first time in quite a while. I realized all of a sudden that I don't have any excuses, and I'm only limited now by my own creativity. Scary!

So, here's what I got:
24-track digital Portastudio
Behringer tube preamp
Behringer condenser mic

I already have a POD XT, an SM57 and SM58, and I'm well covered as far as a variety of acoustic guitar, electric guitars & amps. I just basically eventually need a bass for direct in, something for drum tracks, and a little keyboard, and I should be able to do just about anything I want to or can imagine.

My website has been a labor of love, starting out with having a simple chili recipe and my "History of the Blues, Part 1", to adding more and more guitar stuff - a lot of it's been throwing down my little clips in response to questions like, "What do ____ strat pickups sound like?" or "How's that SD Booster pedal?" etc, etc....
Maybe it's just me, but the number of effects questions seems to have increased, and I intend to eventually make clips for as many pedals as I can.

I'd just like to add that I really appreciate Steve_R's and GoMano's advice, as well as those who responded to the recent recording thread. Although I had to make some of my own choices, I kept thinking about something Robb said .."get the right stuff, and it will be the equivalent of walking into Electric Ladyland!" (Sorry, Robb, I know I'm paraphrasing).

Again, my humble thanks!

Peace,
Curly

thanks, Mike!

this certainly cuts down on some of my excuses! :D

although I even managed to get a couple tracks made last night, I still have a lot of reading to do to feel comfortable with this stuff. it's pretty awkward for me to record electric guitar directly digital as opposed to micing the cab - just doesn't sound right, and I had a little problem sync'ing with my rhythm track.

But I'm kind of excited to hear what my Martin sounds like with the condenser mic and the SM57 at the same time. :)

Re: I just bought a recording studio.

Coool, Curly. I know who´s place I´m stopping by on my way home. Chili and a recording studio, this I shold enjoy ;) :D

Re: I just bought a recording studio.

your're gonna have an awesome time though........learning all the cool stuff you can do...

making your own music is majic...plain and simple!!!

Re: I just bought a recording studio.

thanks, guys!

one thing I think I sacrificed in going to a self contained box with a hard disc and cd burner, is something Steve pointed out - the convenience of using a mixer-into-soundcard solution for conveniently ending up with an mp3 file.

I still haven't figured out if I can use a USB interface to upload from the portastudio to my pc. :(

thanks, Ez!!
my ol' compadre Domingo told me, "you'd be surprised, but you need at least 16 tracks".

the last recorder I had that could double track was an Advent cassette deck! Now I don't know what the heck I'm doing!

It's pretty amazing - the new stuff has a lot of power, but I wonder how many like me long for the simplicity of something like a good reel to reel!?

I'm not whining at all, mind you, I just have a lot of catching up to do ...

before I left the store, the guy just looked at me, smiled, and said, "you're all set!!" :D

Re: I just bought a recording studio.

That's awesome! At least you kept all the gear within a certain size.
That'll make it easier to take it places, especially to record drums in a proper room with YOUR gear. After learning the gear, you'll have a newfound respect for real engineers and producers. It's a lot of real work to be player/producer.

A few years ago, a friend and I embarked on putting together a studio.
He bailed out of the project, then sold his half to me for pennies on the dollar.
I love the studio I have (Mackie HDR 24-96/Soundtraks 24-8 board, plus
racks of rackmount stuff and mics, but I'm finding that I wished I'd gone the computer based route, or something more portable. Now, I have a dilemma.
I had to take the studio out of my rehearsal room, to make more room in there, so I can't record live drums and live guitar. I have it at my apt.
where all I can do is direct recording projects. I can tell you one thing,
having a home studio only works if you have no girlfriend/wife/kids/ or other distractions. I'm having a hard time getting any work done without potentially butchering my relationship. Emotionally dependent women don't understand how many time consuming hours it takes to do a project.
I'm thinking of selling my studio, and replacing it with a computer based
Protools or Logic setup, so I can shuttle it back and forth between the apt.
and the studio. I'm in a band, so having the studio at home is doing me no good. It has to be where the drums are.

Joe,
yeah, I'm not really up on all this recording stuff, but it seems like a really practical solution for someone in your position is to have a compact mixer that can double as a PA, but that you can hook up to a nice computer for recording/ editing, then you can update the computer when it's cost efficient, and even get a laptop, and have a pretty decent but fairly portable studio as well.

One drawback to my machine is the small size of the editing window compared to a computer screen;the down side of editing software for me is turning "knobs" with a mouse - it's just not the same.

I was a little torn between the two methods.

Way to go Curly-mon! Maybe we'll be able to lay down a track or two together next time I'm out your way. I'll probably do the Escondido thing again same time next year but I'll try to plan it so we can spend a little more time together next year. Congrats! Lew

Re: I just bought a recording studio.

Very cool. I too just made a decent investment in a studio, I have a Yamaha AW4416 on the way. When I get the bucks I am going to get the Waves Y56k card for it which enables a much great range of FX and Mastering tools. I just sold a Fostex VF160, there is just too much that I did not dig about it. The 4416 should be a sigificant upgrade. I had looked at the Tascam as well.

Congrats!!!

right on, bro!

that's good - it gives me a whole year to practice, since I heard you're a pretty good player! :D
we probably know a lot of the same songs! from the Ventures to Yardbirds to blues .... I'll play rhythm , you can play lead ..:)
we could do a bluesy-surf rendition of "Shapes of Things" :D :D

hey, kev!
thanks man!
you're honestly one of the fine players here whose great clips have pushed me along into getting something decent to record with, so I appreciate it.

I'm sure the Tascam will meet my needs for quite a while. I noticed those guys also carried some Yamaha equipment as well.

I saved a good amount over the listed online prices - enough to pay for the preamp and mic, so I'll just pass along the phone # for anyone interested:
