I just bought a recording studio.

Re: I just bought a recording studio.

Dang Curly - thats a nice setup you got together.

Now, just take the time to learn the controls, see what everything does, and have fun. ;)

Artie,

HELP!!!, I'M IN OVER MY HEAD!!! :D

hahaha .. I tried recording with my preamp into my pc just to test the sound, and got some kind of loud ground noise ... bummer!
typical gear problem, plus the wiring in my place ain't the best :boggled:

and, yeah, I have a fair amount of reading to do to get up to speed ...

hey, I probably should repost our "guitar links" pages

take care,
G

Curly...You're a buddy so here's the basics of what I wrote...
I still use my old cassette Tascam 8 track 488 MK2...I run this,my Boss DR770 drum machine, and my Korg Triton into a really nice old Pioneer SX 1010 stereo receiver...I also recently bought a Fender Mexican Jazz Bass because I'm into real time playing right onto my tracks..I normally will run right into a great and pro used and sounding Digitech GSP2101 Artist I've had forever, right into the 8 tracker and I don't need to distant mic or mic at all...I'd like to experiment more with mic ing my cab also..I Like to have some kind of idea of the structure of my song and then I Lay down a drum beat and a bass line..Sometimes just a great bass line can get a song started...Once I have a drum beat and a bass line,I build onto that..Keyboard fills if any,are usually put on later unless the keys are the highlighted instrument..Normally the guitar parts are the main instruments though..After all of my ideas are finalized onto my Tascam,I then plug my Tascam into my sound card and record my song onto Guitar Tracks Pro and into a "wav" song..From there it's converting from "wav" to MP3 or WMA which you taught me! I Like to use my modded Boss or Tube Screamer pedals into the 2101 and use a nice 2101 clean tone so I can hear the pedal's tone..I need to do alot more recording but that's my story anyway..

I forgot to mention that my Pioneer SX 1010 runs into 2 actual Event studio monitors...All of this is setup in a seperate area within my home..All I ever need to do is bring my 2101 into the area and hook it into my Tascam..My 2101 normally resisdes in another room with all of my guitars,amps,etc... :smack: :)

Re: I just bought a recording studio.

All I can add is that Mackie make some nice desks - not so good for live mixing, because of the short throw faders, but apart from that they're pretty versatile Some of them give you the option to send out at mic level rather than +4, which can be pretty handy. We have one at work (i'm a sound guy), I'd like one myself for recoring into the computer, one day.

Just stay away from something like a cheap Beringer desk, they're not proper proffesional grade and don't put out proper +4 on the sends and stuff liek that. They make great DIs though, go figure.

Re: I just bought a recording studio.

thanks for all your input!

I read through my manual ... the digital stuff is a little overwhelming to me because of all of the features, but once I get past just figuring out where all the buttons are, I won't have any problems .. I think I've always had decent success just approaching recording intuitively, once you get past the technical stuff you need to get the job done.

I found out my unit has file transfer via USB 2 - just hook it up and send files either way. So there's 40 Gigs on the Tascam, and I have 120 Gigs on my PC ... uh, I can do a lot of recording! :D

all I can say is ... ooooooooh weeee!!!! :)

Re: I just bought a recording studio.

Curly, That is awesome! Do you mind if I ask how much you paid for the Portastudio? I have the 8 track version I was going to sell it but I backed off, it is a great unit. You will be thrilled with it. The Porta should have a SPDif out port no? If the USB 2.0 to WAV doesn't work the SPDif will. I would recommend upgrading to at least something like an SB Audigy card on your PC to compliment the new recording system.

Great purchase and have fun with it, there is a bit of a learning curve but it is typically well built and well thought out as are most things TASCAM. They used to have a great board, almost as good as this one but some idiots got carried away and they really throttled the board down. There is usually someone there that can answer any question you'd have and quickly.

Good luck and inspiration.

hey, Scott!
thanks, man!

well, a quick look in the manual, and I didn't find anything about SPDif (whatever that is? doh!)
I'm sure I can use the USB transfer, although my PC is so old (pentium III), it's USB 1, and I need to add a USB hub.

prices:
Tascam: $1029
preamp: $91
condenser mic: $91

as I mentioned, I saved enough over the online price to pay for the preamp and mic. I put the dealer info on the previous page.

and, yeah, since the recording thread, I've been considering the Audigy - I have a Soundblaster Live! now. The inputs on the Audigy definitely look like an improvement, besides the bit rate. Which model did you get? The $90 to $130 models looked fine to me, and I didn't see any features on the "Platinums" that added much for me..

and thanks for the "inspiration" ... my mindset has to change, since I have to get used to the idea of working on songs diligently towards a goal of actually finishing, rather than just goofing off playing! :D

Peace,
G

What a great deal, 24 tracks for a grand, HOLY CRAP. I paid $799 for my 8 track version and I was psyched. I really like using my SM57 with the ART Studio V3 Tube MP and Levelar PTC. The ART gear really helps warm things up for cheap. I have the SB Audigy Platinum but I have the first version, I'll hve to take a look at the new ones. Most of the PC's I build are for offices and sound isn't a priority so most of it is onboard  There are a few other cards in that range but Creatives driver support is usually pretty good so I stuck with them.

SPDIF is Sony Phillips Digital Interface. It looks like an RCA jack but it puts on a 24 bit digital signal as opposed to using analog outs. If the USB works for you greeat, no need to look any further. Check your PM's I think I have a cheap solution to your USB 2.0 issue.

Nice going Curly...then we can dig more of those sweet tones of yours:)
thanks, Rid!

unfortunately, I think I put a lot of pressure on myself by "going public" :D

and, Wattage ...
I "roll my own" PC's too, and just stick with the good, tried and true components - much less hassle that way, for not a lot more money. :)
My main uses are CAD and graphics, but it looks like I'll have to get up to speed on the soundcards out there now.
I had an ART preamp on order, but the Behringer was more features for not a lot more money, plus it's 2 channels, and still uses a tube.

I just have a whole lot to learn, and looking at new technology ... well it's easy for me to get overwhelmed looking at the specs when your shopping around - I'm glad that part's behind me!

Cheers,
G
