Gotta say also,that for a player like EVH that some of us feel is more hype than talent,I see an awful lot of EVH posts covering many things...Mainly the guy's tone...Must be something to it?

Absolutely it is! With that though,I've read where one player plugged into another's setup and sounded like himself with either setup...Not sure if it was something like Ted Nugent plugging into EVH's setup or whatever? You guys can correct me on this...I play through different setups and the guys in my band say I pretty much sound the same...Crappy! ;o)

The reason I sound the same though,is because I mainly go after classic Marshall,BF and Tweed Fender,and early Vox "type" tones..

Once our ears and styles grow acustomed to certain things,we kinda stick with it.

How the hell did it go from EVH/Clapton/Hendrix to Cobain was awesome? The only time Cobain and EVH should be in the same sentence is if you're saying 'Cobain shouldn't be in the same sentence as EVH'

I am not into his tone or playing. Certainly not his tone, too thin and trebly.

It is funny, a buddy of mine in a funk band says Eddie is the most over rated guitarist on the planet. He says he is not that good, LOL

I'll take Cobain over EVH because he is a master song writing, which to me is better than someone who just wanks on the guitar.
I don't mean that in a bad way, I grew up loving EVH but not these days and he is very talented! .... just not my thing.

1) There are many excellent players that are not impressed by EVH. You need to get out more often (and with grown ups).

2) You're quoting Robbie Krieger? Your arguments are running out of gas baby. Tricks and gimmicks don't take the place of musicality. Are you attracted to shiny objects too? Eddie isn't in the same league as the solos in Heartbreaker or Crossroads.

3) We're not 'Eddie haters'; we thought he was cool at the time, but it's gotten old; the party was over a long a time ago. He's spawned tens of thousands of imitators, some of which have surpassed Eddie. While influential, Eddie's playing certainly has it's limitations. It'd be nice to have less gimmicks and more substance. You need to start hanging around guys that really know how to play guitar.

4) Maybe the 'quintessential rock guitarist' by your standards (such as they are), but many of us would argue otherwise. Eddie's flashy and commercial. Not everybody's into all that hype. What about true masters of the guitar, like Eric Johnson and Robben Ford.

I like Nirvana in small doses. I do though see Nirvana as being the ring-leader with the Grunge movement which KILLED solos and almost killed heavy metal. Were only starting to recover.

There are some staggeringly popular, highly respected players who don't impress me much. But instead of flaming on them, I usually keep my stupid mouth shut and find something else to do instead.

I like Eddie's playing a lot. I never found many of his solos particularly inspiring ('cept for some of the stuff on 1984 where he's channeling Allan Holdsworth) but his rhythm playing (at least from 1978-84) has always blown my mind.

I've always considered his tone to be a benchmark. It's generally been at the core of the "tone in my head". His guitar tones with DLR are less gainy than most people realize, much like AC/DC's guitar tones are a lot cleaner than you might think.

I think it's ridiculous to blame EVH for inspiring legions of spandex-clad wankers, even if it might be true. It's not like he brainwashed them or held a gun to their heads. He inspired a lot of folks to pick up the instrument and you guys act like that's a bad thing! :scratchch

How many of you have heard the demos that they did with Gene Simmons? While the material is there, hearing VH songs with Kiss-like tones (no offense, Aceman) is pretty uninspiring. If Donn Landee hadn't captured that distinctive tone, I have trouble imagining Van Halen being the influential band that it was.

Simple fact is, when guys get pussy whipped, then everything goes to hell.
Bertenelli was the Yoko of the EVH band.Dimaond Dave bailed on that sh*t, and made Eat em and Smile.
Ed went on to do a bunch of pussy wipped crap.
Nothing wrong with VH-1 if you like really really high gain sound with some guitar gimmickry, but lets get this perfectly clear..the guy couldnt play a decent clean lick if his life depended on it.
I love the first couple of epic albums, but theres a lot of crap filler pop ass sell out tunes on them too.

Van Halen is a great guitarist, but the whole Van Halen project was nowhere near the creative genius of the top british Rock bands, and relied to a great extent on the massive appeal of DLR.

Nobody brainwashed tens of thousands of SRV imitators either, but the fact remains that they're there, twanging away in bars every night. I agree that it's good for people get inspired to play guitar, someone lit the spark in each of us. Everybody builds on something that existed before. The downside is when so many march lockstep after a hero, instead of taking more varied paths. And that's not the hero's fault. The legacy I see from EVH are the guys that built on what he did and took it to another level, or in another direction. No matter how good anyone is, there's always someone better coming along.
