I need a teacher, so I'll buy a book

Yep... I NEED some kind of lessons to know where I'm going. I'm quite decent for my level (less than a year) but I have no idea about what to do most of the time. I'd rather follow a straight method than do random exerices like I now do.
I've been advised Troy Stetina's speed techniques for metal first. I may not be able to do the whole of it at all the speeds, but it should give me better riffing techniques and control over both hands, which is for now what I'm looking for.

Any suggestions?

Sounds cool, I borrowed some of his metal instruction books at the local library, and they're quite good and easy to understand, IMO.

Try the Metal Lead series... Speed Mechanics is great, but you'd have to be insanely motivated and incredibly patient to get anything from it by itself. And at the end of the day, it'll make you a great shredder, but you won't be able to solo. That's where the Lead books come in.

Edit: if riffing matters, go for the Metal Rhythm series - although keep in mind MR1 is pretty easy, so MR2 might be more suitable.

Would that even be good for me? Lead or rythm, as long as it's methodic and up to my level, and that will make me improve it's good. I couldn't find MR2 on amazon :(

Suggest anything else if you wish.

Ohhhhh http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0825625564/ref=pd_ir_b/202-9113368-4524665 that one seems interesting too, I always thought fingerpicking was one thing I suck at.

ML1 will give you a solid grasp on playing lead. ML2 simply expands technique and ability while introducing more theory.

I think ML1 would be very beneficial - go for it. (keep it mind that it assumes that you have a basic playing foundation - which you do)

I, myself, had to buy MR2 and ML2 from Music44.com. Only volumes 1 were on Amazon :(

I shall go for ML1 then! Thanks! I can't wait to try and get it :)

Good luck - I think you'll really like it. Let us know how it goes :)

Edit: check out this clip - it's the 4th (of 6) solo in ML1, and my personal favourite.
