I need a wiring diagram for my guitar tech

Hey forum. I want my Fender Stratocaster to have neck/bridge and neck/middle/bridge pickup controls as well as the standard 5 way switch. I was needing a diagram for wiring a strat that way. I was wanting to put a toggle switch on to add the other switching options.

Did you go onto the actual Duncan website under support/wiring diagrams etc?

Re: I need a wiring diagram for my guitar tech

I'd be a little worried about using a guitar tech who couldn't figure this out on their own.

Unless by "guitar tech," you mean "a friend who can solder," in which case...

You just need a toggle switch or push-pull pot that turns on the neck pickup in combination with whatever you have selected on the 5-way.

That would give you this:

5-way.........switch on

Neck..............N/A
Neck/Mid........N/A
Middle............Neck/Mid
Mid/Bridge......Neck/Mid/Bridge
Bridge............Neck/Bridge

I thought the same thing.....One of the main reasons I've learned to work on my own stuff all these years! I Know it's done right and with lotsa care!

This is confusing to me! Why would you discredit my guitar tech? That isn't right imho. I never said the man couldn't do it. The guy is a good guitar tech, but simply needs a diagram. At least I'm not taking it to a guitar center. I do in fact agree with that one poster who said "I learned how to do the work myself". I wish I knew it all myself as well, but I can't soilder that good. Thanks for the help anyways. I just figured that someone on a pickup website would know how to do this

Don't get your panties in an uproar newbie.....Good luck...Let your tech do the research! The internet provides us with a wealth of information on how to do stuff ourselves! I don't let anyone touch any of my guitars, even though I have one tech that I do trust if I get too deep....I still am afraid to do a fret job,but one of these days I'll grab a cheap neck and will learn how to do that too...Don't take this stuff personal..

I didn't discredit your tech, you did when you said he needed a diagram.

To me, a good guitar tech should know enough about basic electrical circuits that you can tell him what you want it to do and he can figure out how to do it on his own. Or at least be proactive enough to find out how for himself.

That's all.

But now that you know what you need to achieve your goal (you're welcome!) a diagram should be pretty easy to acquire.

Unless you expected someone here to make you one...?

Re: I need a wiring diagram for my guitar tech

It's an easy task, and if a tech can't find the diagram to do this or have an idea how it's done, he's not really a guitar tech, yet... Not saying he should know everything, but being able to find out how is an important step in becoming a tech.

Basically, it's just a switch to turn the neck or bridge pickup on regardless of where the selector switch is. It's seriously one switch, two wires. He SHOULD be able to handle that. Did he ask you to find him a diagram?

If I take my car to a shop for repairs...I don't look up the "how to fix" info before bringing it in! WTF? ;o)

My thoughts exactly. Though I do, but that's a different story. I'm a mechanic, but if I don't have the equipment to do it (like installing tires), I do want to be informed of the process, so if they screw it up, I know how/why.

I agree....I get the feeling the guy wanted a certain setup and the tech said if you find a diagram,I can wire it up that way..The tech is probably a busy guy and doesn't have time to look up that specific info...If it's something new and unique to the tech,I can't blame the guy, though "technically" he can probably do the work.

The LudNutz, stick around. We are a helpful group. We always try to help each other.

soso and SD97 are right - the burden of research (and execution, and explanation) should lie on the person getting paid to perform work.

You could try a 3 way N-NB-B switch and a blender pot for your middle pickup for maximum versatility.

Re: I need a wiring diagram for my guitar tech

It seems like I known stratdeluxer97 before someplace. Have we met?

What I'm saying is, If I told my guitar tech something like, its your job you know how to do it, it would P him off. "you can tell him what you want it to do and he can figure out how to do it on his own." I'm not trying to do his job. To be clear, I'm actually showing him what I want done and making that more simple to understand and maybe I'll learn something myself. I usually confuse ppl when I try to explain things and ppl usually don't understand what I mean. When I pay someone I expect it to be done right. People on the internet say something about someone in the real world and aren't always right, because they don't know them. I keep my opinions to myself. To be clear, I didn't get mad or anything, It just seemed like it came out wrong. I couldn't soider a wire if my life depended on it. My guitar tech has always done excellant work for me and not everyone does all work the same. That was all I was trying to say. I'm new on this forum and I want this forum to be enjoyable for myself and everyone else. I know sometimes people will have their differences, but in the end I will always love each and everyone the same. Take care forums -Jake

Re: I need a wiring diagram for my guitar tech

Omg thank you so much for this diagram!!
Just one more question though that I don't understand. What position does the stock stratocaster's 5 way switch have to be in when you turn on the switch to enable the neck and bridge or all 3 pups?

That depends on how you wire the switch... In this particular diagram, the switch is "Bridge on." So basically you are adding the bridge pickup to whatever you have selected with the pickup selector switch. So if the selector is in the neck position, pull the other switch, and you have neck + bridge. If the selector switch is currently on neck + middle, use the extra switch, and you add the bridge pickup, so all three would be activated.

The other positions are already handled by the selector switch, so in these positions, the extra switch would just be duplicating the roles of the selector switch.
