I hate Ernie Ball strings as well, their plain strings wear out faster than any string brand I've ever tried...and I've tried just about all of them. That aside, my opinion is that most strings are pretty much the same regardless of who makes them. The difference is in the material. Pure nickel, nickel wound, and stainless steel all sound differently. I use pure nickel strings exclusively because I like the warmer tone and feel. As far as brands, like I said, they all sound the same to me. I do notice that Gibson Vintage Reissues last the longest due to them being vacuum packed. I use those most of the time, as well as DR Pure Blues and Fender Bullets ($3 a pack, and they're surprisingly decent.)
