I need new strings

Re: I need new strings

I hate Ernie Ball strings as well, their plain strings wear out faster than any string brand I've ever tried...and I've tried just about all of them. That aside, my opinion is that most strings are pretty much the same regardless of who makes them. The difference is in the material. Pure nickel, nickel wound, and stainless steel all sound differently. I use pure nickel strings exclusively because I like the warmer tone and feel. As far as brands, like I said, they all sound the same to me. I do notice that Gibson Vintage Reissues last the longest due to them being vacuum packed. I use those most of the time, as well as DR Pure Blues and Fender Bullets ($3 a pack, and they're surprisingly decent.)

I'm surprised that nobody said anything about Dean Markley's Blue Steels!

That reminds me...stainless steel strings will cause your frets to wear faster than nickel strings will.

well... i've tried fender bulllets, gibson brite wires,d'addario(stainless steel) and earnie ball before.. out of the four my fav is earnie ball followed by brite wires... the stainless steels last long but i dun really like the feel .. i'm currently playing earnie ball

Re: I need new strings

On most of my electrics I use Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky in stainless steel, those guages run from 9-46. On my main stage instruments, the LP Custom and Tele, I use a Skinny Top/Heavy Bottom set by Ernie Ball, also in Stainless Steel. Those guages run from 10-52. The thing with that set is that EB doesn't package a stainless steel set in those guages, so I have to order each guage in sets of 12.

The truth is, there's only about 3 string manufacturers in existance. They just package the strings under different names. I've never had any problem with Ernie Ball strings.

Re: I need new strings

Just this summer I began using DR Tite-Fit 11s on my LP and DR Pure Blue 10s on my Strat and Tele. I'll probably never buy a different set of strings again.

DR makes a hex-core string that's supposed to be a great string for metal. I've never tried it, but it might be worth a shot.

There might not be as many manufacturers as brand names but I'd venture to say there are a few more than three. I know for a fact that Ernie Ball and Everly have their own string machines. :smoker:
