..i played my jazzmaster for a long time. why is that damn volume knob for the strat so close to the pickup? i prefer to have some breathing space there for my pinky. time to mod the damn strat or just sell it.

To each his own... The Strat is my favorite design, volume knob and all.

Volume swells? I dig it there....

Re: i never realized how stupid of a design the strat has until...

I'm all for hating the volume placement. Whats worse is other guitars that copy the placement. Ugh.

Re: i never realized how stupid of a design the strat has until...

I love the placement of the Vol knob. If I could get a LP with a vol Knob that close to the bridge it would be the perfect LP for me but until that day comes ill stick to strat bodies.

love strats, hate the volume knob.

one of many reasons I prefer PRS Singlecuts to LPs.

Love it as is! I can volume swell with my pinky or turn down real fast if I have do.

It is very close but I actually don't mind it at all. Never given me any trouble and it's BAM right there for volume swells.

It isn't stupid, it is actually pretty damn smart. The controls are mounted on a pickguard, so customizing your layout is easy. You can make yourself a pickguard with the volume control placed wherever you want it, it won't cost you an arm and a leg and it is fully reversible. Try moving the pickup switch on a Les Paul ;)

Re: i never realized how stupid of a design the strat has until...

It's actually the best guitar design of all time, and if it wasn't for Leo Fender, I'm sure we wouldn't be having this discussion right now.

Re: i never realized how stupid of a design the strat has until...

When I started playing other guitars only then did I realize how friggen close that thing was to the volume knob, and consequently I was able to move my hand closer to the bridge and get more attack from my sound. Now when I play Strats my hand runs into the thing all the time, and if I'm using a tram bar that knob is in the perfect spot to get in my way.

My solution? Move the volume knob into the neck tone slot, and wire the 2nd tone knob as a master. Boom. Problem solved.

And yes, I know they designed it that way in the 50s so Bill Carson could get pedal-steel style volume swells out of the guitar.

He's right, though. If it weren't for the guy who invented Strats, we probably wouldn't be talking about Strats...

Re: i never realized how stupid of a design the strat has until...

i reckon its in a great spot. Ive never notice it to get in the way and its always there when you need it woithout having to look down, but i do notice my young students knock theirs a lot.
