I like an odd combination of pickups and using tonewoods of my choosing. I like creating a guitar using parts and hardware of my choice. I can let my ideas flourish. I have built many partscasters, some I still own, some I have sold and I have built some for others. I would gladly pit my partscasters against any guitars hanging in any of the guitar stores. Yep, I kinda like what I do.

I like making my own sandwiches, I find the choice of bread,larger filling portion and lack of mayo makes for a much more personal & enjoyable gastronomic experience than any shop bought culinary creation.
I also built a tele & like it

I've built several cheapos to give away to students at school, and almost half a dozen higher end guitars I thought would be "the ultimate do everything guitar" for myself. In the end, I never ended up with anything better than a slightly modified factory guitar from Fender/Ibanez/Gibson/PRS. When you go to sell them, they are next to worthless, whereas name brand guitars hold their value. I still enjoy messing around with new ideas though.

that was loud as hell

i like fenders, i like store bought sandwiches, i like biscuts and gravy at a diner or cafe. that doesnt mean i cant build a better fender, make a better sandwich or biscuts or gravy for me than someone else. i know what flips my skirt and am more than capable of makin it. doesnt mean i dont go to that diner or cafe or deli... good stock fenders have a thing just like a decent kitchen, and it can be a great thing. given my druthers maybe id change a thing or two but i still buy stuff off the rack and go out to eat.

I want to build an HH Tele. Do you have any tips? Best place to get parts, I want an ash body with a maple fret board. So what do I do?

There are many options. I personally purchase from Warmoth because you can either order a special build to your specs or order what they have available. Musikraft is another option. Check online.

When you're a lefty and in Aus, you're pretty much screwed as far as availability and price. I think MIM's are about $1200 here......and you are likely to have 1 or 2 colour choices only.

But I've gone beyond partscasters into scratch builds - the ultimate in choice.

And it allows me to go way beyond the confines of woods typically used even by places like Warmoth etc

+1. Investing in a partscaster is lost money. I have done it, the experience was good but not the end result. Playability was top notch, sustain was so bad.

Investing in anything is lost money when it does not deliver the expected return.

What about taking something like this and upgrade hardware and electronics. It has an ash body and a maple fret board and costs significantly less than getting parts from warmoth.

If you buy a guitar without testing the sustain/tone you really have no idea what you will end up with. Better quality parts, pickups and hardware will make anything sound "better." If you start off with a turd and invest money in it, in the end, you still have a turd. If you decide to go cheap, look into Guitar Fetish bodies and necks. I have a GF Paulownia strat and tele body that I have built into partscasters. Not exact Fender specs and some corrections needed to be made, I have to tell you, they both sound excellent. Those were a science project that exceeded my expectations. Of course I used Seymour Duncan pickups, Edenhaus necks and better hardware.

I obviously do not want a turd. But isn't an ash body an ash body and a maple neck a maple neck as far as tone and sustain go?
Please bear with me I am a complete novice, have never built a guitar before.
