I Want a new amp. Marshall guys help please.

Re: I Want a new amp. Marshall guys help please.

That last one is a new seller with no feedback.
You have Reverb protection of course, paypal, bank ect,,.....but who needs the hassle.

And just to be clear, I'm not saying every new seller is going to be bad, but with a 50+ pound amp and a new seller the chances for major packing error are certainly there.

I recently went with a brand new seller on reverb and it went fine, but I'd only do so on a pedal or pickup (under $100) and not on a big item. Just IMO.

Re: I Want a new amp. Marshall guys help please.

My knowledge is absolute-zero on mods.
The seller buys more than he sells and has been on a couple years, both positives IMO.

If I see a seller only sells or does so like 95% of the time then they go into either the flipper or retailer group, and in either case I need to see a lot of positive feedbacks (like in the hundreds at least).

And watch out for pawn shops, they often play dumb and purposely not notice any defects, and are some of the worst at showing quality pics.
I'm sure there's some good honest pawn shops with Reverb accounts, but be especially careful with them on ebay.

I really really appreciate all the input guys.

I am Learning so much, and although we all have similar, yet, different tastes in what we like in music and amps etc.... I appreciate the input.

Going to try to get south to a guitar center today and lay my ears on a few amps, probably pull the trigger on one tonight. (I am very impatient at times)

Re: I Want a new amp. Marshall guys help please.

I got to GC and test drove the DSL. . . (new model without the JCM2000 logo)
To sound as much like my own guitars as I could, I first grabbed a shecter with duncans, then a jackson with emg's, then a gibby with a 500t. Marshall cabinet with gt 60's?

The gibson Had the strangest kind of thick muffled craziness out of the gibby... drop-D tuned, when I would chugga chugga quickly and switch from say 3rd to 5th frets, there was a muffled deadness to the sound! like a WHOOOMP sound... (anyone venture what was going on there?)

I thought perhaps the guitar was wired incorrectly so I grabbed a different LP with the 490 and same thing! like a speaker getting pushed over its limits.... or a muddy bass note.... it was weird.
I backed the resonance knob off, as well as the EQ Bass.... didn't change too much! Scared me off a bit.

Granted I only had it at very low volumes in the middle of GC.

Then I test drove a 6505+ and really really liked the crunchiness. It was the only other Peavey in the building (looking for a JSX) besides an XXL which I already own.
That 6505+ was nearly magical even at very low volume.

Wondering if the JSX has more gain than the 6505? Anyone know? Or maybe that 6505 is flat ****ing Br00talZ enough! I just HATE the chickenhead knobs though... is that a thing??? hating chicken head knobs??? because if it is. I suffer from that ha ha ha ha.
I would have to swap those out....

I think chickenheads look cool, but I too prefer regular round knurled knobs for their feel.

I Want a new amp. Marshall guys help please.

I know two guys that have a DSL. One has the 100W head....that amp blows. I tried and tried to get a good tone out of it and just plain couldn’t.
The other guy has a DSL40 combo. I sat in on a gig with him one night and was blown away at how good it sounded. Granted, we are talking rock tones and not metal tones but I was impressed.
I have another friend with a JCM2000 TSL...again, that amp blows. Couldn’t get a tone out of it.

I used to own a JVM. Good amp, noisy as hell so you’ll need a gate. My particular amp kept having an issue with the Fx loop. I sent it back to Marshall and they couldn’t find anything wrong with it so I just assumed it was probably user error. I sold it. But that amp sounded really good. Out of all the Marshall models that’s probably the one you would be most interested in.

I'm surprised by this. I have an old jcm dsl 100 and a 40c and they pretty much have the same basic sound. Not exactly, the 40c might have a bit more gain and it's a combo, but they sound pretty close. The 40c footswitch even works with the old jcm.

Possibly just the particular amps I tried? I was ina band with the guy that had the DSL100 and his tone was just thin and didn’t have any “character” to it (for lack of a better word). I even have him a NOS RCA preamp tube. It helped but ....
The combo otoh sounded great.
