I want a new amp.

Re: I want a new amp.

ugh. I've had a really bad GAS going on for one of these amps of any size for a long time and posting this video didn't help one bit. I asked the guy and the only thing he can't really figure out is how to make an amp clean which is, you know...not exactly a bad thing for most people.

I feel ya. That video rocks dude! I'm going to have to consider those

Re: I want a new amp.

Anyone who says they want a new amp without a clear idea of what they want to achieve is headed for a roller-coaster ride of gear trades. Nothing will satisfy until you figure out what it is you want to get out of it, but more often than not, you end up losing money and forking out bucks to finally get the sound you come to realize that you want.

Re: I want a new amp.

It's more along the lines of, "I want these but don't know how to narrow it down to one choice." I need to win the lottery.

I totally get where you're coming from though. I've been down that road before.

Re: I want a new amp.

All right, I just got back from playing a Dark Terror. Have you played one of those?

I was VERY impressed with the dirt on that one. An FX loop added in just made that ugly little sucker jump way up in my interests. With a drop A going it's very, very thick and evil sounding.

I haven't played one but I've heard only great things about it from people with a similar taste in music. It's definitely a monster. Did you find the gain to be overly fizzy?

On a side note, since you brought up Hovercraft I've spent all day listening to the different models. Thanks alot, Jon :laugh2:

Re: I want a new amp.

My big jones for a while has been an Electric Amp (aka Green Amp). If it wasn't completely impractical and really expensive... The clips i heard have the heaviest, most unrepentant stoner vibe ever. But they are over 2 grand, they weigh a sh1t ton (58lbs for a head???) and I am not sure how you could get a clean sound from them.

But in a perfect world man, I'd have a full stack pushed by one of those br00tz.

Seems like these Hovercraft amps offer a little of the same vibe without spleen-busting weight, wallet-busting price, and ear busting volumes.

HAH yea, Hovercrafts are baaaaaaaaaad mamajammas. It's a smidgen more than an Orange Terror too with the Dwarvenaut 20s being $650. although you get more uncontrollable, big bottle watts. It ain't a brace of el84s running the Hovercrafts; he's building some retarded lovecraftian nightmare possibly using a quad of kt120s. That's....a lot of power. That's more power than standard cabs can take.

But yea, about the Dark Terror. The gain was a little sharp when the shape and gain knobs were dimed. It was a hyper-scooped tone that had too much top end bite and sounds like the tone modeling amps get when you scoop. Roll the shape off little by little and it becomes a MONSTER of thick gain. I really, REALLY liked the middle and all the way left. Very fat and very saturated. It was running into an Orange cab that I assume was not a 4x12 since it wasn't ultra-massive. Closed back too.

It impressed me. It can even clean up and get reasonably loud. Thru the Orange cab it was hard to keep it under control and it seemed plenty louder than the Peavey 50w valveking I played at similar knob levels. The only weakness that I think the Terror series has was overcome with that FX loop too.

The prices for hovercrafts aren't bad, it's the wait time and not being able to order at any time you like. Hence my obsession with orange.
