I want my SG to sound like AC/DC

Re: I want my SG to sound like AC/DC

Could be a T-Top, or could be those tarbacks. I had a '79 SG with those. I think the neck measure in the 5K's, and the bridge in the low 7K's. Did those have a ceramic magnet to make up for the low winds?

I think Angus's SG was older than Tarbacks?
Yes, they have an odd ceramic magnet, something like a "Diox 7"

It's not really a complicated formula. Nearly any PAF replica can get you there. It's more about finding the right balance of distortion, volume and postion than anything else. When you start to get harmonic feedabck you just ride that loop.

Yep, I have to agree. Getting a good AC/DC tone is more about mojo than gear. No amp, pickup or pedal is going to get you there. It is all about riding a dingo while the blues blows your hair back.

No, his original SG was a 71 (go onto the solodallas site for a rundown), which came with T-tops. '73 was the turning point where SG's then got fitted with Tarbacks.

My 85 SG also has Tarbacks like your 79, and as you say they are 7k and 5k with a ceramic mag. An interesting tone for sure, but somewhat different to a T-top

Check out Dave Allen "Powerage Pickups"
Or Bare Knuckle Riff Raffs

Re: I want my SG to sound like AC/DC

There’s another company too that makes a pickup set based on angus’s sound. David Allen pickups I beleive is the name of the company. If you go on their site you will be able to find them right away. I never heard them personally but I’ve been interested in his pickups for a while. I see his pickups on eBay also usually for a pretty fair price imo.

Re: I want my SG to sound like AC/DC

His site is not around anymore so Ayrton is probably correct that he must be out of the business.

I grabbed a pair from Reveb today. Not sure if they will go into my Epiphone SG or SG Gothic.

Re: I want my SG to sound like AC/DC

I believe David has exited the pickup business

I’m hoping that his absence is temporary. He’s an honest guy that makes pickups that deliver. I had heard he’s having medical issues, if that’s the case hopefully he makes a full recovery and he comes back one day. I just was ble to score a lightly used set of his P51 mustang humbuckers for my new Les Paul. I love his single coils too.

Re: I want my SG to sound like AC/DC

I have been looking at the Powerage ones for my newly aquired SG Gothic.

There is a shootout on Youtube between the Powerage pickups and the SD 59's, and the Powerage pickups are way better IMO

Re: I want my SG to sound like AC/DC

Brobucker bridge and Pearly Gates neck is what I use but the High Voltage Humbucker set looks great.

Re: I want my SG to sound like AC/DC

I watched rig rundown just the other day, for Angus and the replacement for Malcolm... can't recall his name. I believe one SG was a 71', his current #1 that tour and a 67' which was his #2. His tech said the only change they make is to put in SD Custom Shop pickups. Otherwise, they make no changes unless something breaks and can't be repaired, because Angus demands it be that way. Original pots, wiring, switches, knobs...... noting changes. Angus hates change.

It was an interesting review. And you wouldn't believe the settings on his 100W Superleads unless you see them for yourself. Strange.

This is the only thing thats going to sound like Angus ... they're all modded by Trace @ VooDoo with PPIMV's.

Re: I want my SG to sound like AC/DC

Most of those are spares/backups. I wouldn't be surprised if 2 maximum of those is the most he ever goes through at 1 time.
