I want to buy my first SG, SG owner input please. :)

Re: I want to buy my first SG, SG owner input please. :)

Also another thing I noticed about Sg's, the body is horizontal and the neck dips down at an angle and the pickups and bridge slant down like a wedge shape, interesting.

my les paul does that. its just how the neck is set. Its not hard IMO to set up a tune o matic bridge. And if u feel comfortable in doing that, if it seems to be buzzing and fretting out[ at least that what I picked up by your description] give the truss rod just a little bit of a clockwise turn. and i do mean a tiny bit.

Re: I want to buy my first SG, SG owner input please. :)

At the risk of sounding like a heretic, I like the bolt-on SGs. The neck joint is way sturdier. They can sound great with the right pickups and can have mahogany bodies. Pete Townsend destroyed over 500 glue in models from 1968 to 1971 or most of the available models and had to switch to a LP Deluxe with mini buckers. He states that he didn't smash them but merely shook them to pieces. So the neck joint is the Gibson Sg's weak point. I can always get a new bolt on neck, but glue in necks are real expensive repair jobs.

I love the first line.

This is an excellent point. It is expensive to get a new glue-in neck.....

The tone is different. I'm sure the tone might be 'as good' but it's still not the SG tone. It's more of a mahagoney strat tone.

Petes only had like 200 (:boggled:) SGs ever, and onl like 60 of those were trashed.

Assuming I read that right, then somebody probably took the pickguard off and in the process screwed up the pickup angles, because they're NOT supposed to be slanted at a wedge angle. They should be level from side to side.

Normal. You'll see that with any TOM style bridge that isn't recessed. If you were to order a strat body with a TOM style bridge you'd want a sloped neck pocket to create the same angle.

.. the mahogany grain on epiphone SG's is better than Gibson SG's!!!!... lol.. I wonder what's under those epi veneers

The G400 is mahogany under the veneer. IIRC, mine is 3 pieces inside, and probably not very attractive.

The pickups should be parallel with the strings and not the face of the guitar. If you look at the pickup mounting rings of guitars with TOM bridges it's not uncommon to see the pickup mounting rings be a wedge shape in section.

See what I mean?? I has to raise the action a lot on the heavy side as the strings were buzzing being fretted anywhere from the 12fret and on.

And while I'm at it, I traced out a pickguard idea on paper, what do you guys think? Material of choice will be diamondplate or checkerplate. :)

OK, going to start cutting and grinding the diamondplate today for the pickguard, I'll get some pics up soon, also making two strat pickguards as well.
