I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

Re: I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

Ooh that looks really cool. How's the weight?

If you go for it, make sure the truss rod works. I wound up swapping my tuners on my '75 for Hipshots.

Re: I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

A Strat AND a 335?

You are like all legit and everything suddenly!

Re: I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

Tell the guy you want to meet up and play it extensively, make no promises about whether or not you actually want it and that it's totally dependent on the instrument. Because while some 70's Fenders may be turds (and heavy turds at that, I picked up a similar looking late 70's tele and I swear it was like 12-13lbs) some of them were great. And that guitar is probably worth a good bit more than yours.

Is he talking about a straight trade?

Re: I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

Wait from the pic it looks like a hardtail is it? If it is for me personally that would be a no go but you may like a hardtail vintage strat. But definitely play it to see weather or not it's a dog turd or not.

Re: I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

Thats some really nice grain on that North Ash body. Its going to be pretty heavy. TRy and move the neck see if its stable and yes, play it to see if it stays in tune. Lots of those guitars have unstable necks cause of the three bolt thing, and if you modify them, it really rips the value.

How much is that MIJ jaguar worth in players condition? Can't be that much- , what 900.00 tops?..and I frankly do not get the wow factor of a common MIJ guitar like it's some kind of sacred cow.

If thats a straight across trade, DO IT! That guitar is worth between 1500.00 and 2O00.00 without much trouble.

I wouldn't want it though, I'm not into hardtails .. A hardtail really knocks the value of that or any Strat guitar down a lot, and makes it a lot harder to sell, but still, thats an investment guitar. Something to hang onto and let it climb in value, or put on the market and take your time selling for a nice profit.

Re: I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

Check the neck pocket too.

A hard tail can make a very nice player. Neck is probably toothpick thin. I had to refret and used Jescar SS 57110 wire, which made the neck feel more substantial.

Re: I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

The loose neck pocket thing is way overblown imo, but here are my thoughts OP: check the weight, I owned a '79 a while back and it was very heavy. So much so that I got tired of playing it and sold it. It sounded pretty cool but nothing special, that is no better than a modern Strat. Oh and remember the fretboard radius is pretty rounded compared to modern Strats/Teles. Some people dont dig it. Other than that though old Strats are cool guitars.

Re: I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

I'm not into the idea, I don't like that it's a hardtail and just this morning I got the news that the wants some sort of $$$ to seal the deal.

this is the guy that owns my old tele!!

Re: I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

The loose neck pocket thing is way overblown imo,

During the 1970s, I owned four different big headstock, three-bolt neck Strats. They were all as heavy as lead, had massive necks, sloppy neck pockets and pathetic pickups (garbage tuners, too). I'm not just saying that to be nice, it's the truth. I was in my teens and early twenties and struggled with those instruments until i finally gave up on Strats for twenty years ... at the time, i didn't know i was wrestling with the worst Strats Fender ever made.

If you want a 70s Strat, find a Tokai SilverStar, they did it right. I own one and it is FAR superior to any of the Fenders I owned. And they're not expensive.

Re: I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

Crusty's right. Back in the day the Japanese product was looked upon as inferior, but in actuality its good stuff.

My 75 needed new pickups, frets, nut, saddles and tuners. But its got a tight pocket and about 7 pounds.

Re: I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

Worst era for strats. I could go down to GC and pick 10 Mexican strats off the wall that beat it in every way.

Re: I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

I'd never consider trading my long-time player for a '70's Fender, unless I was really getting something that I could instantly flip for 10x the value of said long-time player. Horrid guitars like that are pretty much the reason for the birth of the "vintage" guitar market in the first place. Not only were they badly made, but they were ugly as sin. Now just because they are old, and because they are somewhat affordable, people are talking them up, along with Norlin-era Gibsons. It's crap! They were bad back then, and they're just as bad now. If anything, they're worse now than they were back then, because they've got 30-40 years of age on them.

This is exactly my opinion. I would not do this. The grain looks nice but, I have "heard" some were made of plywood and had a veneer. Whatever get to play it first. If you are skeptical dont go for it.
