Re: I will have to face the fact I will never own an ...

I just remembered that, if I save my pennies, I can have guitars that will blow my mind. They don't have to be vintage, or custom, or five thousand dollars, or any of that. I know what a great guitar sounds and feels like, and I occasionally have folding money. Guitar stores, look out.

But with two humbuckers. HSS or HSH bugs me.

Or a legit Oracle with three single coils.

It's a Signature Odyssey. Signature only existed for about 4 years and never really got anywhere other than Alex Lifeson playing (And hating) them for a couple albums, Power Windows and Hold Your Fire I believe. Still and all I love the look of them and they are closest to my "Dream" guitar that I would have to have built fully bespoke custom. Given that the cost would probably be that of a decent used car that'll likely never happen.

Heh, don't you just love overpriced short-lived brands? The gear hipster in me is locked in an eternal war against my wallet.

Yeah, I spent almost 25 years hunting down a Heartfield EX-1 before I finally found one I was willing (And able) to pay for. Amazing guitar, way ahead of it's time, but not surprising they never took off either given their feel and price point at the time. But then, I see you have an Elan, so you probably know exactly what I am talking about....

Re: I will have to face the fact I will never own an ...

Haha, that poor Elan. Best sounding guitar I ever bought. Desperately needs repairs. Gave it a lot of love and maintenance to get it up to running speed, but needs a refret job, will be about €250. Was gonna get it done this spring, but then car needed repairs for €350. Then was gonna get it done this summer, but just moved to a new house, so spending a bunch on that. Aaaah, but she waits for me, patiently. I can hear her siren call from inside her case....

The Aries Bevel? Cool looking guitar, close, but not quite. Think more like Ibby RG body outline with a carved top and a 24 fret thru-neck with that Signature headstock. It'd be a complete throwback to 1992 or so, but I dig the idea. In concept anyway....

I saw my EX-1 at a hock shop and had my eye on it for a couple months. A couple months dragged on for about a year and I finally went in and messed with it a bit. They want $450, but it seemed to me that it needed a fret job pretty badly. I pointed that out and offered them $300 and they grudgingly took it. I took it in to a luthier I know and respect and he was able to get it in reasonable playing shape with a crown and polish job so I walked away for under $400 total. Not too shabby. Even has the original hard case.
