...was the original name for the American-exported cars made by Nissan.
They haven't used that name in the US since 1986, although they are bringing it back for smaller international markets.
Re: Ibanez? If Fender and Gibson are Chevy and Ford . . .
I'm in the Toyota / Nissan bunch in it. They are super functional and reliable but maybe not very high on mojo factor. As for that, despite the obvious financial success of (IMHO) producing the best stock/value guitars around, they are all descendants and variations of Les Paul and Strat designs and nothing can change that. Old pioneering companies will always have that extra dose of hype.
Now what would be Ibanez's radical invention? I'd say maybe the lens-profiled Saber body shape, swirled finishes, and most importantly seven/eight string guitars available to mere mortals. But I don't think they ever went beyond mashing up and modifying existing designs. Even more of that can be said about ESP: they can make some great quality guitars, it's just their design ideas aren't original at all.
The way I see it Ibanez strives to make the guitar better to the consumers by solving the problems that no other manufacturer seems to care about.
That said, Ibanez does innovate or at least, facilitates guitar playing: the heel-less AANJ (All Access Neck Joint), joint of the neck and body at higher frets, both intended for easier upper fret access; the ZR tremolo for better tuning stability, that new truss-rod cover that doesn't require removal of the screws to open, the push-on bar found on Ibanez K-7.
There is a reason why acrobatic players like Steve Vai stick to Ibanez and not a Les Paul cause LP is just too heavy and doesn't wrap around the body. Even Gibson admits that by chambering it.
True Gibson and Fender pioneered the solid-bodied guitar but that is a long time ago. I am not sure of any of Gibson's or Fender's innovation TODAY that ACTUALLY have a use for guitarists. The only one I can think of is the Les Paul with the automatic tuning feature but does anybody need a self-tuning guitar?
