Ibanez S vs RG

Re: Ibanez S vs RG

If any of you think the new S and RG models have different feeling necks, it's all placebo. They've both used Wizard II necks for some time.

The Japanese Prestige RG's use the Wizard I necks which is much thinner than the Wizard II and the Korean version uses Wizard II's. The RG 550 re-issue's use the Original Wizard neck, which is Ibanez's thinnest neck made. I owned the s-470 for a few years and it's a very light guitar. Body is almost too light that it's almost neck heavy, giving it a slight off balance. Some of the new S series 08' models come with 24 frets and the Herman Li signature model has got to be one of the sickest S series models I've seen.

Here is a list of neck specs: http://www.jemsite.com/jem/necks.htm#thickness
I have many RGs and a S, they are both nice guitars just different. I would vote for the RGs, I started playing them in 89. I would look for an RG 5XX, MIJ ,Edge trem, and Wizard neck. The MIJ has a very nice feel to the Wizard 2 neck, the body don't have the thick ass ploy coat like the MIK. If you can find a 5XX with a Wizard neck you will have a great shredder. The Wizard neck is not for everyone, very thin amd flat, I have 2 RG550 with this neck.

Re: Ibanez S vs RG

Interesting discussion....I've been eyeing one of these and maybe some of you can give me some opinions on this one:

Ibanez RGA121 RGA

I play mostly classic rock, some clean stuff and '80s type rock. I love an axe that has tappable HBs for more flexibility. I've been an LP guy for years, but ready for something that plays better.

The reviews are very favorable. :beerchug:

Off all the RG's my local store carries, the RG 121 Prestige is my fav.
I do not like that colour though - i prefer this one :

In real life the colour is truely beautifull, compared to a small digi pic from a web site !

But still, i prefer any S over the same priced RG !!!

Thanks for the reply...I really need to make sure I try one of these from someone who allows returns cause I may not like that neck.

Color? He...he...I tend to like more neutral colored guitars since I can wear anything I want with them without any color clashes. Most guys prolly don't care about that...I'm kinda old fashioned.

Re: Ibanez S vs RG

Man, it is funny how things work/happen !
I phoned my local store (i phone them once a month tho hear if they got anything new that i might want to go and have a look at) and they said they got a bunch of Laney amps & Ibanez guitars in.

They the only one that is brand new (to the shop) is an RS670FM.
I do not know how it looks like, but will go and look tomorrow !

Re: Ibanez S vs RG

(better sounding too, in my opinion, although I will not argue with Joe Satriani about tone),

Don't confuse the S-series with the JS-Series (Satriani sig) they're 2 completely different beasts. I personally love the JS Series. They just feel way more comfortable to me. I've owned S-series and RG-series guitars as well. They're all good guitars so it just comes down to personal preference.

Yup. The JS guitars are close to my ideal, and one day I will own one. Basswood bodies, HH config, and a lot more wood than the S series. The neck is just about perfect, too -- it's based on a worn-down Strat neck, so it feels different than what you'll find on the S guitars.
