Re: Ibanez Tube Screamers......
TS808 Tube Screamer Overdrive Pro
the TS 808 is one pedal; the Overdrive Pro is another
The TS 808 is supposed to be a reproduction of the original TS-9 ...
I think you meant to say it's a reproduction of the original
TS 808
the best "off the shelf" of the regular pedals
for me is the Maxon OD808.
the best of the custom type tubescreamers
for me is the Maxon OD820 Overdrive Pro ... this is a hand made pedal that sells for about $200-$220 new.
TSs are known for their mid hump, which works great for some lead playing (like blues), but not as well for other stuff, like clean chords -- even though TSs are also known for keeping chord note separation.
Original TS 808s had a bit less gain, and less mid hump than the later TS9s -- they are a bit more "transparent".
Why do I like the Maxon OD808? It is a very
subtle pedal. When set as a light OD, it retains the original guitar tone well, and just a subtle boost for leads. It's also light, and has a "regular" switch.
for about $150, I'd recommend a used Maxon OD 820, rather than a modded TS9. The OD820 operates at 18volts, so it has an improved frequency response. It's kind of like a "poor man's klon".

A very smooth OD, somewhat transparent.
(I have clips of both of these pedals on my site if you poke around a little.)
If money is an issue, than just get a TS7 and play it a lot before deciding if you really need to have it modded.
