Alot of people seem to like these. Are they good stock or do they need to be modded? Whats the difference between the three different models of tubescreamers?

TS808 Tube Screamer Overdrive Pro
TS9 Tube Screamer
TS9DX Turbo Tube Screamer

Anyone have clips of any of them? Any info would be appreciated... Thanks in advance.

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamers......

The TS 808 is supposed to be a reproduction of the original TS-9 with the 4558 chip in it and the proper resistors. Basically supposed to be a copy of the original ones Maxon made for Ibanez.

The TS-9 doesn't have the 4558 chip in it. It has a little more drive and a less clean tone. It needs to be modded, 2 resistors have to be replaced, and a 4558 chip placed in it to get the true tone of the originals.

The TS-9 dx is a TS-9 with a bunch of switchable mods, one hotter, one with more low end, and one with both. I like it, but it's still lacking the 4558 chip. I'm probably going to get mine modded by Keeley.

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamers......

Get a Bad Monkey instead, its cheaper, sounds better and has separate low/high controlls. :)

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamers......

im a big fan of the ts9 but yeah it does need to be modded. stock it has the classic TS mid range spike and the tone knob may aswell not be there most of the time i think.

as afore mentioned, drop in some different resistors and i would also change the value and quality of a whole bunch of capacitors too, along with the putting in the new chip.

you can get mod kits for about 20 bucks so if you are willing to do the mod yourself you will end up with a better pedal than the 808 and for less money too if my memory serves me.

never used the ts9 dx so i cant speak for that one

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamers......

If you want a modded Tubescreamer, get the cheapest one you can find (including the black plastic one or the Tone Lock, each can be had for <30 bucks). The circuit is close enough in all to get them to 808 spec.

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamers......

If you're looking for that classic sound then I would say get a Keeley-modded one and just be done with it.

I've owned a bunch...and still own a few. They're all kind of different in thier own ways. But nothing is that classic Tube Screamer sound like the Keeley-modded to my ears.

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamers......

i like the TS5 and the TS7...thats about what all TS's should cost. No need to spend hundreds- it is a very simple design.

I agree with the Bad Monkey though. I rarely use my TSs now...the Monkey, with a little more gain, the treble and bass, and smoother mids beats it every time. And new, they are around $40US.

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamers......

I have a Spina modded TS9 and a Stock RI. Johns modded TS9 smokes the RI. No comparison. The Spina modded TS9 has more gain and a lot more bottom. I used it initially with either a Deluxe Reverb or a Super Reverb. Worked great with both of those amps. Now I use it with the clean channel of a Bogner Shiva. The Shiva doesn't need much help, but this gives me some added tonal variety.

I bought my TS9 used for $30, then John modded it and I can never see any reason to remove it from my signal chain.

Another Forum memeber here makes custom pedals. Xssive. He made me a Monroe drive and this is more of a 808 on steroids. It has the classic 808 tones but it has a few other options. It has a bass boost, and a mini togle that allows you to get 3 different levels of gain. Very versatile and great sounding pedal.

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamers......

The TS is like plugging your guitar into The Nanny.

I like the Boss DS-1 though. Very natural sounding IMO.

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamers......

if she would keep her mouth shut i'd plug into the nanny. ;) hahahhaha

ive heard overdrives that are $20 that smoke overdrives worth 4x that much. its simply a matter of finding what works for you. id try the arion tubulator and other cheapos first. worst comes to worst you havent dropped hundreds on a name...

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamers......

Compared to my other overdrives, my TS9DX seems to have a frequency response which has the perfect midrange focus to make the toobs fuzz up without having to be too loud. The main difference between the TS9 and the 808 is that the 9 and the 9DX sound a little more harsh, which is what I prefer.

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamers......

just go to guitar center or your local equivalent and plug into one. if you like it then find a second hand one and get it modded. the mod doesnt change it as much as it makes it way better at what it does

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamers......

i own the TS9/ 9DX/ 808 but i like the TS7 most. it's devoid of any spectacular tone inducing chips but sounds great in its boosted 'HOT' mode- more drive without loosing the TS character.

PS: the TS9/ DX does include a chip in its circuitry: TA75558

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamers......

TS808 Tube Screamer Overdrive Pro
the TS 808 is one pedal; the Overdrive Pro is another

The TS 808 is supposed to be a reproduction of the original TS-9 ...

I think you meant to say it's a reproduction of the original TS 808

the best "off the shelf" of the regular pedals for me is the Maxon OD808.
the best of the custom type tubescreamers for me is the Maxon OD820 Overdrive Pro ... this is a hand made pedal that sells for about $200-$220 new.

TSs are known for their mid hump, which works great for some lead playing (like blues), but not as well for other stuff, like clean chords -- even though TSs are also known for keeping chord note separation.

Original TS 808s had a bit less gain, and less mid hump than the later TS9s -- they are a bit more "transparent".

Why do I like the Maxon OD808? It is a very subtle pedal. When set as a light OD, it retains the original guitar tone well, and just a subtle boost for leads. It's also light, and has a "regular" switch.

for about $150, I'd recommend a used Maxon OD 820, rather than a modded TS9. The OD820 operates at 18volts, so it has an improved frequency response. It's kind of like a "poor man's klon". :) A very smooth OD, somewhat transparent.

(I have clips of both of these pedals on my site if you poke around a little.)

If money is an issue, than just get a TS7 and play it a lot before deciding if you really need to have it modded.

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamers......

Tubescreamer's are great for boosting something already overdriven. On their own, they're another thing, which you must decide for yourself.

That said, the analogman Tubescreamer's sound good on their own. I believe it was the Silver mod.
