Ibanez wiring help (SH-4)

Hey guys,

So one of my students/friends has an Ibanez SAS36FM guitar, and wasn't happy with the bridge pickup tone. So eventually he settles on the JB for his bridge pickup choice. So I figured I'd save him 40+ bucks (plus as it has a coil tap) and install it myself as I had his brothers axe and all my own etc...

then I ran into a problem. The pots have a circuit board on them creating a third row of lugs and the pickups have 6 leads! WTF. No matter which diagram I look at I can't seem to find his exact. The closest was:

http://forum.ibanez.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=81707

Here's the thing though...his has TWO TrueDuo pickups so both pots are the 9 lug switch type, as well as his switch is only 3 way (has the same amount of lugs but every pair is bridged). SO my question is: can this JB be put in with this other pickup? He doesn't really care too much about being able to still coil split but it would be nice. Would perhaps just changing out the Tone knob for a regular 6pin push/pull be all that I need?

Thanks in advance guys, this one really stumped me. Here are some pics (I'm linking due to size):

I have a few more and can always take as requested! Thanks again

Re: Ibanez wiring help (SH-4)

the jb can totally be used. what is in that pic is a push/pull pot. the three pot contacts are in their normal place, the other six are for the dpdt switch part of the push/pull pot.

follow this, at least for the jb part

Re: Ibanez wiring help (SH-4)

Hey Jeremy,

Thanks for the reply...did you not see what I was talking about about the extra row on the 6?. In the second picture you can see the white/red/ and black wire are hooked up to this extra row, not to any of the 6 regular lugs in a DPDT.

Also, did you mean to include a diagram of some sort, or what did you mean by 'this'?

Re: Ibanez wiring help (SH-4)

ok the tone control in the second pic
(it has the cap on it)

I see what looks like a 4th row

can you write down where the wires are connected now

then remove the wires

then with a multimeter

start with the switch in the down position

put one meter lead on the top-most terminal
move the other lead one at a time to each of the other 8 terminals
note which ones show continuity

move to the next one below it

repeat as above
until you have "mapped" the Down position

pull switch up and repeat

this is tedious I know
but you have the switch in hand and we don't

be patient

post results

Re: Ibanez wiring help (SH-4)

ok looking again

if you dont care about coil splitting

put the JB's black wire where the Blue wire hits the selector switch

solder and tape the red/white pair

the green to ground or the back of the volume pot

if you want a split with that switch
we can do that but we just need to sort out how it works first

Re: Ibanez wiring help (SH-4)

Hey thanks for the quick reply...I have been out of town for days.

I'm going to try and wire it up sans-coil splitting for now but will get back to you on the mapping out of the pot as it would be nice to give him back the full function it had before

Re: Ibanez wiring help (SH-4)

I cannot seem to get the pickup working without the tone pot...ahhh dam.

My multimeter doesn't have a continuity function (how I managed that I dunno)...But looking at the trace on the PCB:

1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9

With 3 6 9 being the 'extra' lugs and 9 being closest to the pot shaft.

3 > 4
6 > 5
9 > 8 > 1
2 and 7 are traced to the ground tab (and where they have the ground go from pot to pot.

The configuration of the old pickup was:

3-Black
6- Red
9- White
switch- blue
Ground- Big black (a collection of 2 coloured and one bare wire)

Hope that helps you help me!

I am sorry
but I haven't any idea what that means:eyecrazy:

set your multi meter to ohms

touch the leads together it should go from
infinity -- OL --- or some such
to
0.0 -0.1 or something

this will test continuity

try again please

Re: Ibanez wiring help (SH-4)

Hi,

Sorry again for the late reply (and the confusion) I'm currently on the road so its hard for me to get proper pictures or to check up regularly. since I couldnt take a new picture of the pot I did my best to make due with a picture I found. I hope this makes my above explanation make more sense.

dpdt250kpot-l.jpg

The coloured lines are what the original pickup had connected. NOTHING was connected to the regular lugs, only the 3 extra ones.

What really baffles me though is how come the pickup is not working even when attempting to bypass the push/pull...

RANT:
I'm starting to think I should stop offering my services to friends without looking into it first. Trying to save someone 50$ and just frustrating myself as well as taking away their guitar for weeks! The thing that really frustrates me is that I have wired up guitars with this same configuration...except with 'normal' pickups and 'normal' push/pulls and not these weird pickups and pots (which also only took 30min tops). Aw well...lesson learned. I just am hoping to get this guitar functional as soon as possible, coil tap or not.

Half of me wishes I had a neck humbucker and could just rip it all out and re-wire the damn thing....sorry for the rant, I just get real down when I can't help someone out like I planned! And I really appreciate your patience thus far. Thanks!

Re: Ibanez wiring help (SH-4)

waiting for the results of the meter test

take your meter set it to ohms an see what is connected with the
push pull in either direction please

Re: Ibanez wiring help (SH-4)

Thanks again for your patience... this is going to get a hell of a lot more confusing. My first question is why couldn't I get the humbucker to work even without wiring it for the split??

I checked these 3x over:

Pushed in/ Down

1 > 3
1 > 4
2 > 5
2 > 6
2 > 7
3 > 4
3 > 8
3 > 9
4 > 8
4 > 9
5 > 6
5 > 7
6 > 7
9 > 8 > 1

Pulled/ Up

1 > 5
1 > 6
1 > 8 > 9
2 > 3
2 > 4
3 > 4
3 > 7
4 > 7
5 > 8
5 > 9
6 > 5
6 > 8
6 > 9

So there's a few common between both positions...hope this helps! Once again really appreciate it.

Re: Ibanez wiring help (SH-4)

on the pickup
twist the red and white wires together
read the resistance from black to green
if its a JB then it will be somewhere between 15.5K and 17K

if you read infinity
the untwist the wires
read black to white
and red to green
either should read around 8K

if either read infinity then you have a damaged coil on the JB

lets see what we got

Re: Ibanez wiring help (SH-4)

Hi,

I managed to get it working without the push/pull...I must have not been paying much attention the first time. So at least the pickup is in working order. would still like to know how this damn switch works if possible!

ok let me see if I got this
with the switch down
1, 3, & 4 are common but only 3 is common to 8 & 9
