I'd like to run a custom build idea by you guys....

I love the sound of Gretsch guitars with Dynasonics, but I dont like the scale length or fretboards on Gretsch guitars as much as I do Teles. I also am not the biggest fan of hollow bodies. I realize these elements make up the Gretsch sound (especially the hollow/semi-hollow part.)

If I were to do a solid body partscaster with a Tele style body and neck with Dynasonics and a Bigsby how close to that jangly, thunky (both pickups on, middle switch position kinda sound) sound should I expect to be ble to get?


Any other pointers from anyone else that has built this type of Tele partscaster and pics would be AWESOME!!!

Hit up Marc Rutters for the body and hardware.

he is the goto guy for Tele bodies with Dynasonic or Filtertron routs on TDPRI

I know be has made several of them

You may want to go thinline, too. Or at least chambered.

I think its an awesome idea, I actually plan to build one exactly like that next year, Bigsby and all.

But you don't want it from me - I am a greenhorn!

Man, I6 was all over my answer. (It figures, Mayer plays a Cabronita)

I suggest starting with a Thinline Cabronita body. My new CV Thinline has shown me the light... there's something about the semi-hollow that would make it great for a Gretsch-type project.

Do a google search for Telecaster Bigby. There is an entire page with people who put bigsby trems on teles and I believe there a few on there that were like what you were talking about. They looked awesome.

Meh... that's WAY to Gretschy for my taste. The Cabronita is more Tele-ish in my book, and we all know TELE'S RULE, no matter what pickups you put in 'em.

In answer to your question, well, gretsches actually come in both 24.75 and 25.5" scales, so no you won't lose any "gretschyness" because of scale length. Body wood... eh it doesn't make THAT much difference, you'd probably be alright

On a side note, I have a fender scale all maple warmoth neck with your name on it :D

I know that the La Cabs run Filtertrons, but any builder with the Dynasonics in hand can make a template in about half an hour

Love that guitar D, but I just feel so at home with a maple neck Tele body ya know. Roundups have ALWAYS rocked!!

Have you tried one of the Fender's with Dynasonics? The Fender Telesonic would at least validate your concept before you commit to the project. A decent youtube demo with bad naration. Kind of a dark twang.

WRONG! a myth put about by Ed Roman

Korina is a French word for an african wood and it is the name used by craftsmen of French origin in the US, however the wood is also called Limba which is the Dutch name and that name was used by Dutch craftsmen in the US, which is why in modern international English both names are correct. But Korina is a wood which is why you can buy PRS, Framus and Warwick instruments made from Korina in many colours.
