idea for the vault

drew_half_empty

Looking for Real Life
spinoff thread kinda, deleted my post in there for this one

anyhoo

honestly i think more informative threads should be placed in the vault, and there should be a sticky in the guitar shop, amp central, and pickup lounge showing people how to use the search function & reccomending searching before they post

it'd cut down on bandwidth & keep us from having to go over the same stuff 349,234,358 times. Not that i mind it, but i'd rather respond to threads like "what year vibrolux for THIS tone" than "i need more distortion, what do i do?"

the idea - we should just start threads called "rockabilly tone" and "classic rock tone" and "metal tone" & "blues tone" & whatever else, then everyone who knows something about the typical tones of that genre can respond with all they know, and after a week or 2 it can be put in the vault. Maybe a new area can be started for that week or 2 with only those threads in it, then after that 2 weeks we can just move them to the vault
what do you think?

Re: idea for the vault

i'm also gonna add that i think if these posts happen, they should be HEAVILY moderated, to keep posts down to just 100% information

Re: idea for the vault

...and how are you going to keep posts strictly informational when they deal with something as subjective as tone?

Re: idea for the vault

Some sort of topic like that (or topis) would be really cool. What amp/guitar settings to use, what type of equipment, etc. I think it's a good idea.

Re: idea for the vault

This is somewhat similar to the proposal that I suggested to Scott F for consideration of a new forum category re: electronics.

The information about soldering, grounding, etc. gets repeated "ad foreverum"

I support your idea. I don't think that the the search function is used all that often (I admit that I am guilty of starting a thread without having done a search).

Will be interesting to see how others respond.

Re: idea for the vault

I like Drew's idea, and I think the vault should maybe have subcategories: Pickup Reviews, Blues tones, Classic rock tones... etc maybe. That way, more material can be vaulted without having so much material that it makes finding it difficult.

Only problem though is, how do you discipher between legitimate and not? For example, in Blues tones section there's always going to be someone who says he gets killer blues tone out of a EVH floyded-superstrat into a Mesa Triple Rectifier on the high gain channel with the voicing switch on Modern. That doesn't mean he cant get a blues tone out of it, but deleting his post based on innacuracy will stir up some garbage. Maybe there's a way to moderate those threads peacefully, IE only let each member post in two of the genre threads: IE I could post in "Modern Rock" and "Classic Rock". That way someone doesnt go saying he gets a killer rockabilly tone out of (insert wrong amp here) with a (insert wrong guitar here). Again, I'm not saying one COULDNT get certain tones with non-typical setups, but generally thats not what people are looking for, know what I mean?

Another way to keep it legit is to maybe require soundclips with each setup. Of course, that'll limit the number of posts to about 4 or 5, but at least you can hear and know its legit (or someone legitimately faking the amp/guitar their using).

Nevermind. This got no where. thought I'd be able to contribute, but ended up going in circles.

There's invoking Godwins Law and then there's having him flown in, Limoed from the airport, dined at a 5 star restaraunt, giving him a massage and pedicure and sending a Lincoln Town Car over with a fresh suit to have him picked up and brought to the thread.

Re: idea for the vault

i don't think the 3rd reich is really up for comparisson to a heavily moderated thread

i suppose we could elect forum members to post in each topic, 3 or 4 of em, or the mods could just shoot people PM's letting them know they got chosen for X genre, i trust scott & jeremy's opinions on who knows the most about whatever genre

OR the mods could post polls for each genre & have their top 6 or 7 choices be the options, and then pick the top 2 or 3 to post in the threads

many ways to go about it

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but tone is such a subjective thing.

What I think would be valuable would be posting clips of rigs of folks on the SD board that are excelletn examples of the different genres and give them some time and room to talk about their rigs in depth.

Personally, I'd love to hear folks like Lew, Jeff, GJ, and you to wax ecstatic about what you're running, what you found worked, how your sound has evolved and how it got to where it is.

.....theere just seems like less potential for some hack with a 5150 to come in and rap about how authenticly he gets that Muddy Waters tone from "I'm Ready."

Re: idea for the vault

How about a "The Ultimate <insert amp maker> guide" instead of specific tones? We can go through all the mainstream amps by names like Marshall, Mesa, Fender, and so on. This will help people with finding amps to get a tone they are looking for. We could also go further by adding clips of tones most associated with an amp.
