Ideal cab for a Bogner Ecstasy?

Hey guys!

It's been almost 10 years, but I finally decided to throw down the cash for an Ecstasy 101b w/EL34's. I am playing through a Peavey Vypyr (the 75 watt), so this is going to be a tremendous leap in tone.
Anyway, I am looking for a 1x12 or 2x12 cab. I love a warm, yet punchy tone, with clear mids & less treble. My PRS SE Singlecut plays surprisingly well (I got it for $330 on a scratch and ding special).

I am considering -Port City 1x12 or 2x12 cabs. I know they have a couple different types, but I am most interested in these.

What do you guys think of this combination. I don't need a lot of volume as it's just for me, for now. (if anything, studio recording) is 1x12 enough, or should I go with 2x12?

Also, what other cabs do you recommend?
Thanks ahead of time,

Ruben

I may be odd for saying this... But maybe a bogner?

Seriously, get a bogner 2/12. You won't be disappoint.

Re: Ideal cab for a Bogner Ecstasy?

Wait I misread your post. I saw Port City.

The Port City OS 2-12 is one of the most room filling, musical cabs I've ever heard. They have them tuned in just right!! Rivals most 4-12s I've heard. I am contemplating on an OS 2-12 for my Mesa. You seriously can't go wrong at all with Port City. Yes a bit pricey, but well worth the cash!

Also I'd splurge for the 2-12 just in case you start gigging out!

Re: Ideal cab for a Bogner Ecstasy?

Thanks for the reply CrookTele. The price of the Port City is less than the bogner, so it's good to hear positive things about it. I need to go try one out!

Re: Ideal cab for a Bogner Ecstasy?

For the money those bogner alchemist 2x12 cabs are good, for me the best bang for your buck would be a oversized mesa 1x12....that's what I use.....

Spend a few extra Dollars and buy a Bogner 2 12".

http://bogneramplification.com/2-12-cabinets

I have a Shiva(just dropped it off for retubing yeasterday) but I have a 1 12" RL 34. Great amp and I love it. BUT if I had to do it all over again I would have bought a EL34 head with Reverb and a 2 12". It just makes it easier to carry and move. The 1 12" weighs about 90lbs and I have it in a travel box so that even adds a bit more weight to it.

Think about how awesome it will look sitting on a Bogner cab.... They are awesome! I believe they come stock with Vintage 30's but not sure.

Re: Ideal cab for a Bogner Ecstasy?

At least the Bogner 212 is the matching cab, and it sounds great. There's a 212 on LA Craigslist for $500, but I don't know if they'd box it and ship it.

As good as the Bogner 212 sounds, the ideal cab is the Bogner 412. That cab sounds glorious, but loud as hell with an XTC on top of it.

what about this "uberkab"? This guy's grammar is pretty poor, but it could be a decent deal. He is asking for $370 for a mix up of speakers..

Re: Ideal cab for a Bogner Ecstasy?

Bogner 4X12 is the real way to go!

I own a 101a head and that is what I use when I want to drag out my expensive Bogner amp out!

Re: Ideal cab for a Bogner Ecstasy?

I ended up finding a like new Bogner 212 on craigslist for $525! I would LOVE a bogner 4x12, but I feel like two speakers is enough for me for now.
Thanks for your input guys. Any last words before I let this thread R.I.P? Mistake or good choice?

Re: Ideal cab for a Bogner Ecstasy?

*edit* Oh...I see you found something, congrats!

Re: Ideal cab for a Bogner Ecstasy?

I've owned a boatload of amps, and the Bogner XTC/412 cab is my favorite. They come with V30's, but you could own that rig and do nothing but swap speakers for the rest of your life.

I've used that rig for a decade and it's like my right hand when it comes to amps. I know it inside and out, but am just now starting to mess with speakers. I'm in the midst of some of my favorite speakers for the Bogner 212. The 212 is what I use most.
I'm messing with H30, Emi Swamp Thang, Red Fang etc. Who knows what I'll end up with, but I love the XTC.

For the past year, I was using a Marshall 1960AHW 412 with V30/H30 crisscross.

Awesome, generally I think you are better off getting a matching head/ cab from the same manufacturer... surely that's how the designers intended them to sound. Congrats on what will be a glorious rig!

Re: Ideal cab for a Bogner Ecstasy?

just do what gearjoneser says when it comes to bogner ... I played his amp / cab at the first UGD (w/ Scott F's R8 straight in - no pedals) and I still cant get the stain off my thigh or the smile off my face .. ruined me for live guitar tone for life

Cab brands for that size and that guitar are overrated... they won't start to matter anytime soon. MATERIALS, SPEAKER MODELS? Sure. But brand? Neeeeever, ever pay the premium for the likes of Bogner, MESA, etc. cabs, unless they're getting thrown in used as part of the amp purchase (in which case you're generally paying something silly like $100-200 per cab, and it's all good).

Do I like my 4x12 Marshall 1960A? Sure, it's not too shabby... but that's cuz it got thrown in for an extra $100 with the purchase of a pristine TSL100 head that a foreign client had already paid me to find him here in Cali, revolt to 240v/50hz (piece o cake, juist open it up and swap two terminals to new positions, not even any soldering involved), and ship to somewhere around the arctic circle in Northeastern Eurasia. So yeah, getting PAID to get yourself a nice clean popular name-brand cab, AWESOME... but pay the $900 or so list price for it? That's preachin apocalypse in the streets-level craaaazy.

At best, it's a well-made wooden box w/ 1, 2, or 4 desirable brand-name speakers.... AT BEST. Even in Marshall's case today, the wood is somewhat suspicious, the tolex is flimsy, and the Celestion are MiC.

...in other words, make sure you aren't paying 600 bucks for 2 chinese speakers in a particle board enclosure that's cheaper-built than fruit crates, cuz often enough, that's what these "brand-name cabinets" are, no more, no less. Might also wanna check how much such a box might cost to order, and how cheap you can get those speakers for.

OR... just drop by your local Guitar Center and see if, maybe just maybe, those ~ $79 used Peavey 4x12's sound good to your ears. WHO KNOWS. No clue what their speakers are, but if they're old and working, there's about a 50-50 chance of them being far better speakers than anything you can get in a standard mass-market cab under $1k in 2013, just on account of very possibly being name-brand American not licensed Chinese.

Re: Ideal cab for a Bogner Ecstasy?

The flat 4x12 Bogner cab... man, that thing was impressive. I owned a 1x12'' and 2x12'' Bogner cab prior to that one and the 4x12'' was just something else. Really a huge wall of sound and Vintage 30s work so well with Bogners.

Re: Ideal cab for a Bogner Ecstasy?

Hey people,

I want to thank everyone for their responses. And although that 4x12 is a beast, I really wanted a 1x12 or 2x12. The Bogner Ecstasy head is still on layaway, and I will have it in early July.
So I'm practicing music theory through my Peavey Vypyr 75, and I decide to check craigslist. I first found a Bogner closed back 2x12 for $525, and that was nice, but two weeks later, I found a Bogner Alchemist in great condition. Got it for $450. So now I'm sitting on some awesome gear, waiting for my Ecstasy head. Meanwhile though, the Alchemist. MAN

It is such a tone machine!! Anyone here played one of these? I am really loving mine. For a darker, harmonically rich crunch and lead tone. The cleans are also far better than what I was working with before.

Here are a couple pictures.
