I’m looking for that kind of Schenker/ Van Halen 1 sound out of the bridge of my explorer.

However I would like for the harmonics to be very very alive.

Other option is Duncan custom ala schenker...

I’m not sure how it would sound in an Explorer but the Custom Custom would likely get you damn close.

I think the Custom will get you the grind for the first VH album and of course for Schenker. The 78' will get you the tones of VHII and the CC more 1984.

Of course I would need EVH to record everything I ever want to play for that to happen

Right, right. Completely true.

Right now my explorers timbre is kind of anemic. I don’t like the sound of the Gibson stock pickups.

Well... gibby pickups ARE kind of anemic.... except those zebras with the active boost circuit in the control cavity setup they had in some axes a few years back

Oh and whatever they had in the M-III was pretty okay.

I guess the gibson rule is if it ain't zebra, it ain't hot?? Lol

Closest I've gotten to Schenker (first MSG album era) was with a Custom Custom. Not sure how close that would get you to EVH tones fwiw
