If you could have ONE player's tone, who would it be?

Re: If you could have ONE player's tone, who would it be?

Generally I'm going to say Trey Anastasio, he also has the same name as me. I like his because it's so versatile. With a mostly clean amp and two dirt boxes he gets a great range of dirt. It's pretty much what I'm going for.

it's a hard to question to answer, there are a lot of guys who's tone I like to model mine after. I only said anastasio because of his versatility.

Im quite happy with the tones I get these days to be honest but if forced, I would have to pick the Rev...the reason is simple...Billy has gotten LOTS of KILLER tones over the years.

that's tough...

Santana's lead tone
Ty Tabor's rhythm tone
Mike Campbell's clean tone

Hendrix, Band of Gypsys. For me it is the ultimate tone from the ultimate musician on the ultimate guitar recording of all time. I doubt anything will every hit me like it again. Hearing it as a young person had a very profound effect on me.

yeah keith man, shouldnt be a shock to many people on here. he has really cleaned up his playing this tour. playing a lot cleaner and a lot tighter.

He's #6 on my all-time favorite guitarists list. Sort of a tie for #5, really.

Re: If you could have ONE player's tone, who would it be?

27 actually.
And I'd have to choose between Gilmour and Knopfler.

Well I didn't count that one cause it was a cross between 2 artists :P I was waiting for someone to flat out say Gilmour. Took long enough either way.

To not make this spam, I'll say my own tone that I'd like and yes it is EVH. I just can't pick anyone else lol but at least I'll be specific and say I'd love to have his Live With A Net tone, by far!

Re: If you could have ONE player's tone, who would it be?

i read somewhere that all the rhythms on the ammott-era carcass albums were all bill steer, and ammott just threw on solos. dunno if its true though. at any rate, i prefer stoner rock to death metal anyhow. carcass has some pretty awesome tones though

The intro to Keep on Rotting in the Free World on Swansong is just so heavy but tight... it hits you almost like a church bell and you were the clapper. :D

Re: If you could have ONE player's tone, who would it be?

At the moment, Derek Trucks or Brad Paisley. I'll change my mind again in 5 minutes, though.

Kicking heroin makes all the difference in the world... ;)

Re: If you could have ONE player's tone, who would it be?

"Faith-Hope-Love"/"King's X"-era Ty Tabor tone; open twangy clean tone, thick bright crunchy rhythm tone, and a singing lead tone with bite. The ultimate...

I have to agree that his sound is amazing in every way. Though it's so recognizably his, that if I had that sound it would be strange. But I think his guitar sounds are some of the best I've heard by anyone. His lead tone is so thick and loud live that there's nothing missing when he solos.

Re: If you could have ONE player's tone, who would it be?

You can keep his gear, but I want the sound that comes from Blues Saraceno's hands.

Re: If you could have ONE player's tone, who would it be?

As some others have said, first an foremost, I want my own tone. I want players to be trying to figure out what I use because they are trying to emulate my tone.

However, as the title of the thread says, the players' tones I like the most and whose I would be happy to have are:

  • Brent Mason' clean Tele tone
  • Vince Gills tone here - Killer Tele tone Vince solos in the Bluesy breakdown
  • RobertS' tone on "Have Mercy" (his original)
  • Larry Carlton/Robben Ford sweet overdrive
