If You Guys Haven't Tryed The "Hybrid" Yet?

For those concerned about cost on getting two pickups, there is a much cheaper and easier way to get a hybrid-type mismatch:

Take your high-ohm pickup and partially unwind one of the coils. Be sure to count the turns and a good rule of thumb formula for estimating the DC resistance is 600 turns = 500 ohms (0.5k).

If you have a multimeter handy, stop every once in a while, scrape some of the insulation off the coil wire with an Exacto knife (make sure you're doing this well away from the coil!) and take a reading.

Also be conservative in your removal. If you want to reduce a 14k pickup to, say, 11k, stop at about 12k, put it back together and in the guitar and try it out. It might turn out you like it at 12k (7k coil + 5k coil) better than you thought and while you can add winding back onto a coil, it's harder than just not removing it in the first place.

This is a VERY BAD SUGGESTION!

Yes, you can definitely remove windings from a Custom coil and make it the same resistance of a 59 Model... it would be like apples and oranges.

If you know nothing about Physics or Pickup Design you might think that you would end up with something that will sound the same... uh, they both measure the same on an ohmmeter...

The difference is that a 59 coil is wound with 42 gauge wire and a Custom coil is wound with 43 gauge wire... they produce diffent responses/tones and have an optimal resistace/wind range unique to each wire for good tone... if you unwind a 7k 43 guage coil down to 4.2k it will sound horrible... very thin... also, you will have a large electrical imbalance and a good amount of hum.

This is a typical uneducated misunderstanding of how pickups work... different gauge wires produce a different reponse, harmonics and tone... that is why there is a 42 gauge(59 Model, JAZZ, APII, etc), 43 gauge(Custom) and 44 gauge(JB,Distortion, etc...)

Each coil of the 59/Custom Hybrid has roughly the SAME AMOUNT of wire on each coil so balances out well electrically with very little hum...

Great post Pete.....Didn't want to gang up on a forum member, but I just thought it didn't sound like a good idea to me...I Know the post was done with good intentions, but it wasn't a wise way to try to achieve the same end.

I really don't like having to post with that kind of tone... but...

There is nothing worse than bad information from an un-knowledgable source... the internet is full of it... just because someone can type doesn't mean they know what they are talking about.... including me:banana:... not!

I won't post info to someone else unless I know what I'm talking about! If I'm clueless,I'll ask someone else and learn from all of you...I Know an awful lot about guitars, amps, and electronics myself from being a player/tweaker for over 30 years, but I'm very far from knowing it all..

How would one go about making a hybrid? Any threads with info on starting from the begining? :)
