If you had $1000 to spend...

which guitar would you buy?

I'm looking for something to play classic/southern rock all the way to U2 type sounds. I may be able to put together some cash to do this. It will be my only electric so it has to be versatile.

Thanks!

Re: If you had $1000 to spend...

If I could, then I would have a custom guitar built.

In English money $1000 bucks is about what? 650? 700 GBP. and that would get me a good custom built guitar which would deal with your specs.

Re: If you had $1000 to spend...

I would go for the ESP LTD EC-1000 in the sunburst finish that comes with duncans. That guitar would be EXTREMELY good hardware-wise and the duncans would sound great.

I would straight away plop that cash down on a used Hot Rod 52 Telecaster...that way you get twang or bright on the bridge, and clear or warm and stout output on the neck mini hum.

Probably a Gibson '60s Tribute Les Paul. Either that or a used Charvel San Dimas.

which seems to be a good tip. Telecasters would be good for this role. If you ever want a particular sound then a telecaster can Always do it. (most of the time)

That, or an SG Special.

Either one would make me giddy for that kind of playing.

Me? I'd probably find the best playing, best sounding and feeling Stratocaster-style guitar in my range.

How that applies to your situation though, I just don't see the relevance. If I'd were you I'd try to play as many guitars under 1k as possible and see which fits me. With so many good guitars under $1000 out there, you're bound to find one that feels and sounds just right for you.
