If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

This is probably more aimed at Les Paul fans.

IF you wanted to buy a Les Paul (as first LP, ONLY LP, or just another LP - and you had the money), would you buy a $3999.99 Custom ?

Do you think it is 'worth' the money for the extra bling and the custom name on the headstock together with the diamond inlay ?
I know there are more, in fact, much more expensive models out there . . . but is a 4K Custom all that ?

What is your thoughts on the Custom model ?

The regular custom model is swiss-cheesed with a Nashville TOM.

I'd rather spend the money on a historic.

Depends on the tones you want.......if you want the typical 59 tone (blues or rock player), then a historic is worthwhile.
The Custom has a slightly more crunchy tone, and if you like this (ie for hard rock) then going for an early to late 70's will give you some great tones for less than $4K. Early 70's have abr bridges and aluminium tailpieces as stock.

If I had that money to spend on a guitar, and I wanted a Custom, I'd buy a used Historic model, NOT the standard production Custom. They are far better guitars.

When I sell my '83 Custom, I plan to get an R4 Custom, which I have been drooling over for sooo long.

LP is not my fave guitar but I do like those block inlays :approve:

If I'd buy another Custom, it would be one from the Norlin years. If I had to buy new, for max. 3999,-, I'd look at the 2014 Traditional series and pocket the change.

Probably not for 4K. I've seen Silverburst Customs on Fleabay for less than 2. I'd probably wait it out until another pops up. I know that some years had a different paint that people didn't like. That's probably why they get rid of them that cheap.

I should clarify, after bashing the current Custom, that I like it. Especially the wine red one. And I would always pick ebony given a coice of fretboard wood. It is just not worth $4000. For $4000 you can get an actual vintage guitar such as a 1971-72 LPC that increases in value, probably. But probably is better than having the thing dropped to $2300 the moment you leave the shop.

Absolutely not, unless I hit the lottery or got a big inheritance.

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

I'll do you one better. I worked, saved, sacrificed and flipped over 20 guitars to afford a Les Paul Custom.

I recommend this technique to anybody who loves rocknroll and is not a precious little baby.

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

I dont like customs for the fact they have way too fancy binding front and back. I like the inlays except for the first fret one and love the headstock. If i had 4000 i would save half and buy a R8/R9 secondhand

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

I have a custom. Bought it used. It's a killer guitar and looks amazing, sounds amazing, plays amazing.

I'd buy another one.

New: couldn't afford it though.

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

In theory, yes - in practice, maybe not. I'd be more likely to go 'Historic' or one of the Wildwood spec stuff.

I bought mine used in 1989 for $450. So I would NEVER pay $3999 for one. Not worth it.

I would love another Alpine White one- they are beautiful. But for $3999 I want an Alpine White finish that doesn't discolor, begin to turn yellow or pink within 2 years, has a perfect fret job, is non weight relieved, and has gold hardware that doesn't begin to wear off in a year.

A historic reissue is a much better guitar for the money.

Les Paul Customs are a great buy on the used market, only a little above a standard.

But for $3999 there are much better guitars for the money. If you're solely concerned about the looks of the Custom there's always Heritage guitars or ESP guitars versions- or if you're on a budget, Epiphone

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

If I had $4k to spend on guitars, I'd buy 40 guitars.

Again.

:D

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

I'm a huge fan of retro bling. HUGE. I would click all the boxes on a custom guitar, minus a middle humbucker as I'm just not a fan of that look. Having said that, I would rather pay an experienced luthier to make my MOP/abalone/pearloid/bound monstrosity than to have Gibson make it for Gibson prices.

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

I had a late 80's white custom and a black '57 historic. After trying loads (and I mean loads) these 2 were the best of the ones I played. Although both were excellent examples I decided the white one had to go, it was heavier.... a lot heavier, felt too stiff even though they were both set up very similar, the historic was more resonant and more comfortable top play. I'd say go for a used historic, either '57 or a '68 R.I and you won't look back.

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

my feelings are the same as most everyone else here. les paul customs are totally ripping guitars that'd i'd love to own. but for $4k they just aren't worth it.
