If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

I loved the '68 Custom Tri-Bursts that GC had. They basically had the same build features as the '59 Historics, but at the time they were about $1,200 LESS than the '59. Nice necks, great pickups, good tone. Again though, the problem for me was the weight.

Bill

They made the hollow 68 too heavy?

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

The one I tried was the black '68 Custom with nickel instead of gold hw and VOS finished. The guitar was originally for sale a couple years ago and at the time I had a '59 reissue "Brock Burst" which I'd bought used from Willcutt's. I preferred the Custom. It just felt better, to me at the time but I never connected with that R9 so it's long gone from my world. Gorgeous it was, it just didn't feel the way I thought it should for that much dough. I've gotten out of buying expensive guitars though so in all honesty, even though I loved that Custom, if I had the money I still would probably let it go. As it happens, I don't and most likely won't for a long time so...I'm not saying that they're
not worth the money, but sometimes wanting is more fun than having:)

Those might have been weight-relieved with the "swiss cheese" cutouts, but to my knowledge they were not hollow. The Les Paul Supreme is chambered; my two run 8.9 and 9.1 lbs., and that's with aftermarket LW tailpieces. Customs are not light in my experience.

I thought the 68 model is chambered.

Nope, never spend $4K on any guitar. I have a tough time justifying $2K on a guitar.
I'm glad My Edwards Jon Sykes LPC fills my needs for a LPC type guitar.

I would like to try one of the new All Lacquer Edwards 125ALC though.

NECK Mahogany
FINGERBOARD Ebony, 22frets w/ White Binding

INLAY Pearloid Block
JOINT Set-neck
TUNER GOTOH SG301-04

PICKUPS (Neck) Seymour Duncan SH-55n

And still save $3K .

If I were to buy a Gibby I would probably look for a used LP Classic-Custom instead of a regular LPC.

85 posts in, and no one has uttered the word "richlite." Impressive.

Yup. And that's probably the no. 1 reason I didn't get a new one. When Gibson starts producing Customs with Ebony again, the richlites would very likely have zero resale value. Apart from that, I just don't think you can justify having material like that on a + 3k guitar, or even a 2k guitar.

That ship has sailed. Unless we're talking Historic reissues, I doubt there will ever again be ebony-fretboard Customs. Even Martin is using richlite increasingly.

Ebony is going the way of brazilian rosewood, unfortunately.

Man, that's too bad. I love ebony boards.

I think it'll come back eventually. James Taylor brought to light the issue of WASTING perfectly good ebony that wasn't already uniformly black (when they could have simply dyed the brown/grey streaks black. Apparently a few companies have been doing this, and I think using much less ebony along with wasting nothing will prevent what happened to Brazilian Rosewood. IME Richlite feels good, looks good, and doesn't have any noticeable difference in tone. I'd also be interested in other substitutes for ebony, such as plain maple that has been dyed black.

That is a key reason I wouldn't get a new Custom either. I could care less if it sounds just as good; that isn't the point. The point is, part of that $3000+ price tag is for the exclusivity of getting an exotic premium wood as a fret board material. If that wood isn't used, it should be reflected in the price and it isn't. For the price of a NEW custom, I would just use the money and get myself another PRS artist package single cut: in which case I could also get a crazy maple top, choice of fret board wood (including Brazilian rosewood or ebony), choice of neck wood and pretty much any color I wanted.

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

Assuming I had the money and were free to spend it on other things instead, an LP Custom wouldn't make much sense for me, not right now. There are just too many other things competing for my next chunk of discretionary income. Last time I had that kind of money, I bought a bunch of random stuff, most of it not even guitar-related. But if I were going on an all-guitar shopping spree:

- a new amp head
- a mahogany acoustic
- a new tuner
- a modeler thingie
- another pack of 1mm Tortex

At the same time, I wouldn't knock another player's decision to get the LPC.

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

Nope, if I had 4k I would spend it on this. It's the only thing I'd want to add to my '63 RI CS Fender Tele:

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

I'm a bit late to the game (and finally back on the forum after taking a break due to NAMM burnout!) but I'm a BIG fan of the LP Custom. There's something that's just that bit more awesome about it - multi ply binding, MOP inlays, etc.

I'd never shell out for a new one though (same goes for most LPs, really). But if I had the choice between a second hand Std and a second hand Custom I'd go for the Custom (tone being equal).

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

I have the money, but no interest in spending $4000 on any guitar made. It's simply not necessary. I'd rather have 3 used guitars that are $4k combined, or maybe 3 tube amps or 2 tube amps with 2 cabs, etc.

There are lots of people who have guitars basically as expensive decorations, especially lawyer/businessman types who also have decked out Harleys, but ride them wearing khakis (think Alan Thicke on a Softail. ). Anyone with money or credit can buy an expensive guitar. It doesn't make me look up to them. I'm sure a lot of pricks must have looked down at Eddie Van Halen's homemade guitars in the early days. Meh.

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

This is probably more aimed at Les Paul fans.

IF you wanted to buy a Les Paul (as first LP, ONLY LP, or just another LP - and you had the money), would you buy a $3999.99 Custom ?

Do you think it is 'worth' the money for the extra bling and the custom name on the headstock together with the diamond inlay ?
I know there are more, in fact, much more expensive models out there . . . but is a 4K Custom all that ?

What is your thoughts on the Custom model ?

Early post-Norlin, checked out in person all over thrice and ok'd Norlin, or maybe just maybe one of the new maple-board Customs

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

nooo , even if they gave me it for free I wouldn't. The quality control a lot of guys will agree with me say gibson has gone down hill. The biggest concern now is that they aren't using ebony on their customs. Now they're using a man made material called phenolic resin which is made of formaldehyde and recycled paper.

For the money go custom shop , it's a long wait but it will truly be custom not just say "custom" because if it really is custom you're picking down to the scale length or type of inlays. Just my 2 cents of course.

Re: If you had the money, would you spend it on a Les Paul Custom ?

my LP custom was my 1st real LP (my parents bought me an epi LP special II for my 13th bday bc I had been playing for a couple years by then).

I paid less than $2k for it (used, obvi).

Great guitar. I sold it and was able to track it back down and reacquire it.
