I'm fricken nuts, you guys do this choosing a guitar Lol

tone?

New member
So yeah the verdict is out, I'm looney tunes lol

I have been looking to purchase a guitar and NOTHING is doing it for me
it's not like I am Halen and have the right to be super picky but I am

I have seen about 40 CUstom shop strats and some are pretty darn nice one in particular in Reno that I saw and will visit again in two weeks
but I want an unfinished maple neck

I played a bunch of suhrs, even found one for 1600 and was a real nice guitar but I wasn't thrilled with it , the neck was a but too thin and I want it unfinished
saw a Strat plus deluxe which I kinda bonded to as well with suhr pups in it fir only 850$ but it wasn't quite there. That was about the best

I tried some charvel demartinis didn't jive with the neck
or the tone was pretty mediocre

Went to the world guitar show this weekend in Marin county and there were all mostly vintage strats and gibsons
nice vintage gear but I am not ready to pay over ten grand for a beat up instrument

the funny thing is the guitar I loved the most there was .....get a load of this....a slapped together unfinished basswood body with plain maple neck rosewood board. It played awesome and sang . Had a thick tone and was awesome. Not for sale though. Geez

I think it is the context when you are getting something
you can't really go out shopping for an instrument
it usualy finds you. I mean most stores have crappy setups and it's hard to force something like finding the right guitar

sometimes I think it's better to find something with a good base to work with and mod it

I am actually gonna go the warmoth route and see what I can do this time

I just want a maple unfinished neck and board and have either an ash, basswood or alder strat body with possibly a six hole or two post trem with a hum single single pup config

I'm nuts

anyone else feel like that??

Re: I'm fricken nuts, you guys do this choosing a guitar Lol

I think you're forcing yourself to make a decision and it's making you more picky.

Also consider that guitars don't instantly fit like an old pair of jeans. Sometimes you've got to wear the jeans for awhile first.

I usually don't go "guitar shopping." I avoid trying to find anything. I just constantly and casually check things out, or watch Craigslist. When something smacks me in the face and says buy me.......then, I know I found the right thing.

That SG Diablo in my avatar.....I've never been a fan of 24 fret necks or Alnico 2 pickups, but that guitar is so freakin badass that I haven't been able to put it down since June. The neck is just stupendous, and the tone of the Burstbucker 2/1 has really grown on me. Even the location of the 3 way switch took 2 weeks to get used to.

Re: I'm fricken nuts, you guys do this choosing a guitar Lol

Not really....
Don't care about specs, wood, feel, looks and all that anymore-_-
Some guitars just want you to play in a certain way...no use in trying to change that!
Don't think so much, just play, and if you keep playing, without resorting to speculation.....then you prolly have something you can use!

Re: I'm fricken nuts, you guys do this choosing a guitar Lol

Most guitars suck. There's nothing special about that.

If you can live with 1-5/8" nuts and need unfinished necks then you need to check out Music Mans.

Re: I'm fricken nuts, you guys do this choosing a guitar Lol

Those are pretty good really but have an extra wide heel. Now how dorky is that??

I don't really jive with it and truth is I would seriously consider one but I haven't found one in my area. Crazy eh??

Lots of music mans but not a silhouette special

Cheers

Re: I'm fricken nuts, you guys do this choosing a guitar Lol

my biggest problem is that I have a bunch of guitars that are almost perfect, but each one has one thing I would chnge.. I wish I could melt them all into one perfect one..

But, since I cant do that, I realized Im gonna have to pick one and just play it and overlook the negative feature as the positives will over ride it..

You mentioned most liking a slapped together axe... First, as you know, some of the most famous guitars were slapped together.. Second, ironically the guitar I seem to be enjoying playing the most these days is a BC RIch gunslinger reissue.. I love my Washburn WM526, but the neck is touch wide and the emgs are not my favs, but my bud got one of the bright yellow Richs for $499 and it sounds killer, plays great and the neck just feels like an old friend... (of course it would be perfect if it was black and had a neck pickup.. haha)

yep!

not to encourage you or anything, but i have a MIM strat with a warmoth neck, and its great. i didn't finish it, and really love the feel of the just the bare wood.

also being a lefty makes the diy route more attractive, it took almost a year to find a white/RW lefty strat.

my favorite though actually is a factory axe, so they are out there

warmoth is a bit of a risk just because you can't test stuff out before you get it. you might not be a big fan of the "standard thin" neck profile, or you might find the "59 roundback" is too big. i love my 2 warmoths, but thats one thing that always worries me when i order something from them :D

anyway, otherwise i can't recommend them enough! for the money you put into a custom shop guitar you can get a whole lot when you go warmoth.

Exactly. I've always liked set neck short scale mahogany guitars with humbuckers and yet I'm spending all of my time playing a telecaster lately. Some guitars are just fun to play and obsessing over specs can get in the way of that.

Re: I'm fricken nuts, you guys do this choosing a guitar Lol

Im exactly the opposite. Specs, feel, wood etc. are everything to me now. Esepcially that Ive got some few years of expereeince with assmebly fo soem mutts. I know what works for ME, and Im even geting rid fo a few necks, or changing the fretsize and getting rid of some bodies. Tther are tone wood combinations that just usually work, and others that are famous for not working, and they usually don't in my experience. For heavy compressed fusion it might not matter, but for some really complex, thick organic and dimensional tone, in my opinion its absurd to think you can just fly with anything s has been suggested to the OP. Thats not even to get into feel. As far as "feel", I can compromise a on neck thickness, cause my hands are smaller, but I prefer a thicker neck. I really can't lay a radius under ten anymore , and I'm cahnging every neck I have to Gibson Jumbo size frets.
To the OP, Basswood is a poppy and almost semi hollow sound without much complexity, but with a lot of mids. Its an alluring sound ,although one I can't stand. I would look into having a Custom guitar made to your exact specs with Basswood and a neck exactly like you want it. You can try Warmoth or USACG or others, or grab one off ebay thats real close.

You might be just as happy lightly sanding the back of the neck with like an 400? grit sandpaper. It gives you that broken in feel.

I played a Roadworn Strat not too long ago. I must admit it felt very light and the neck broken in. I actually liked it. :foot:

Re: I'm fricken nuts, you guys do this choosing a guitar Lol

Quit trying to buy a guitar. Keep playing them and one will speak to you.

OR... Call Suhr and order what you want. Have your check book ready though...

Re: I'm fricken nuts, you guys do this choosing a guitar Lol

Design what you want over a couple of weeks and make sure you keep it realistic, which you seem to be doing, and then build it from scratch. It worked for Brian May.

Re: I'm fricken nuts, you guys do this choosing a guitar Lol

Man, what I don't get is that you are willing to pay a good amount of money for a CS Strat OR go the Warmoth route with all its' risks and no resale value and yet haven't thought of having say Suhr or Tom Anderson to build you a guitar based on exactly what you want which if you don't jive with, you'll at least be able to sell (well, as long as you don't go crazy with the specs which from your description you're not) for most of what you paid for.

And the best part is that although it's still a gamble, at the very least you can describe what you're looking for, what you like and dislike and then have a person with a cr@pload more experience and knowledge on what works and what doesn't than all of us combined come up with the specs, filling the blanks for you, and THEN have another guy (or several) build the whole thing, making sure that all the parts will work well in harmony and completing each other, rather than slap various parts from different sources together and hope they'll stick...

I know it's not the same as having a guitar in your hands and see if it sings to you and THEN buy it but, from the looks of it you're just not finding it...

Re: I'm fricken nuts, you guys do this choosing a guitar Lol

Thanks to all the replies guys
I guess that it all comes down to stop trying to buy a guitar
can't force something like that anyway

I also agree with the fact that why should I risk warmoth and not get suhr build me what I want. Well what I want is kinda simple in my mind and paying 2.5k for it is a little nuts in my book. I can honestly say that from playing over a hundred guitars lately that they do differ quite a bit with the suhrs being the most consistent
fender is all over the board but still has some gems out there that need some searching for and the same goes for Gibson

It just seems so enticing for me to get an unfinished neck fro warmoth and slap it in a body and be done with it cause I have so many parts I dint need anything but the wood

I will see and try and chill it
I have some parts coming my way that I want to try out together
I have a basswood body I got from warmoth and didn't really have time to mess with before I came back to the states
I also have an ibanez roadstar which I want to take the neck off and slap on the warmoth to take for a spin

thanks for all the info on my insanity!

Re: I'm fricken nuts, you guys do this choosing a guitar Lol

Tone you have the same problem i do and that's trying to find the perfect guitar, like the others said, just play the guitars and stop trying to buy a guitar, that way you find what feels good and is right for you and that's what i am doing i am taking it easy now, you must have seen my threads, and the responces i got are being echoed in your thread too.

We just need to take that step back and plod along at 60mph in our cadillac rather than flooring it in a mustang.

Re: I'm fricken nuts, you guys do this choosing a guitar Lol

You're overthinking.

Forget about the "best deal" and shopping craigslist and eBay.

1. Go to every guitar store in the city, and play every guitar that sparks even a tiny bit of interest.

2. Buy the one that makes you say "holy sh!t!"

Done.
