I'm going let you in on a little secret....

Re: I'm going let you in on a little secret....

These tubes are making me love my vht again. They're not harsh no sterile but warm and smooth with enough upper mids and low end to satisfy my needs.

Re: I'm going let you in on a little secret....

Yeah, someone was telling me about some really good new production tubes for my Superlead, that sounded really good..like sort of as good as old Mullards, but the thing is they didnt last nearly as long..thier life expectancy was really short compared to old Mullards.

Re: I'm going let you in on a little secret....

The life span of ALL new tubes is fractional of that of vintage tubes...thats just a fact of life.

The new Mules sound pretty solid for sure.

Are we talking pres or power tubes here?

Re: I'm going let you in on a little secret....

12ax7s for sure. I haven't tried their power tubes yet. I only seen of a few. Do they even make all the major types like 6v6, el84, el34, 6l6 and kt88s? I know they make a few but what about all?

Re: I'm going let you in on a little secret....

I fully support tube depot btw. Ordered and shipped the same day, also beat price for 12ax7s at $16.

Re: I'm going let you in on a little secret....

Ah...we're talking about the GT Mullard 12AX7s then.

I was actually talking about the EL34's and the EL84's that New Sensor is doing.

Re: I'm going let you in on a little secret....

No offense, but the new Mullards and the EH equivalents have presented more problems in certain amps and they do not check out in my tube tester. Not saying they don't work, but they usually check out as very soft. If that's what you're after, more power to ya.

Depending on the amp, I have heard Sovtek LPS are really good. I plan on getting a few.

Re: I'm going let you in on a little secret....

I don't know; I've been using the Tungsol 12ax7 pres quite a bit and I like them a lot personally. I've owned just about all of the modern day production pres out there at some point or another and those just work well in the various applications I've tried.

I dig tungsols as well. For my vht the Mullards just feel and sound better.

Re: I'm going let you in on a little secret....

It is just up to the amp, I find I really like EH tubes just about everywhere. The Mullards were really solid as well.

I guess it depends on the amp then. Out of tungsols, ei, genalex gold lion ri, EHX, sovteks, ruby, jj's. the Mullards work the best for my amp.

Re: I'm going let you in on a little secret....

Over the years, I made a practice of raiding all the good tubes from anything I come across, and putting cheap stuff back in. As a result, I've got a box of cool old and new tubes. A lot of it was from old movie cameras that I stripped of tubes, had chromed, and sold to people who want something cool sitting in the corner.

I've tubed all my amps with the best stuff that sounded perfect. The most surprising tube wasn't even a Mullard or Telefunken. It's a 12AX7 that's labeled Belvu made by Mazda. Made in France. I think it's the best pre tube ever made. It's in my Matchless Chieftain's 1st position.

Re: I'm going let you in on a little secret....

mmhmm.. new production mullard 12ax7 in v1 of my amp... if you're amp has a harsh high thing going on this is good for it. They have nice strong mids and if you're going for a british sound i think this is as close as you'll get in new production preamps.. No not talking about GT mullard 12ax7, talking about new sensor mullard, though i've heard the gt mullards are pretty good also. I have some new production mullard el84s as well, they break up earlier on the clean channel and sound fine, earlier breakup than the other chinese pair i have. The new production tung sol 12ax7s are good too but i feel like they are a little scooped sounding and a little harsh on top. maybe better in a fender amp or something...

Re: I'm going let you in on a little secret....

I will share with you a little secret too...

Mullard reissues are the new production tube I love more BUT.... tone-wise, the best ones are Genelec Gold Lion reissues BUT, they are weak, they last very short (some didn't lived more than 3 hours) and are eventually expensiver than some NOS tubes.

Therefore, yes, without any doubt:
Mullard 12AX7 and EL84 reissues are my preferred new production tubes.
And they last, and last, and last...

I did a lot of tube swapping and that's what I want for tone-shaping positions and, eventually for PI positions, because they have an awesome transconductance, nice gain and output, note definition and 3D plain EQ representation, with outstanding harmonic content and an incredible crunch when highly overdrived.
Unfortunately, not easy to source.

Per Tube Depot

Mullard 12AX7 / ECC83 New Production Preamp Vacuum Tube

Finally, a faithful reproduction of the Mullard 12AX7. This tube has the chime and lushness you would expect from a Mullard without all the cost. We really like this tube in classic Fender Deluxe amps and Mesa hi-power amps. These also sing in Hi-Fi amps. We tried them in our AcroSound 20/20 and were very surprised at their accuracy and detail. We like them in just about everything we have tried them in.
