I'm officially done buying gibsons new anyway.

Re: I'm officially done buying gibsons new anyway.

I agree, new guitars with issues like this should be sold as B stock. Its a minor thing in the bigger picture, but simply not good enough for a new Gibson..
Along similar lines, when I was shopping for a Gibson LP studio about 8 or 9 years ago, I played loads of them and noticed that the build quality was just all over the place.. The standout issue I found on a few was that some had fretboards that weren't properly aligned with the neck, so there'd be a tiny overlap on one edge, and a lip of a similar size on the other. It was as though the entire board had shifted by 0.25mm or so right after it was glued to the neck. You couldn't generally see it, but you could certainly feel it. The studio models have no binding there's no hiding it.. Most didn't have this issue but I was surprised that even a few did..

Poor kid, my heart bleeds for him. Wrong color? Chances are he will wind up in jail or institutionalized over the trauma
Ready for the truth? Here’s the update...I knew that the kid had a beginner guitar and a little solid state practice amp. He was taking private lessons and had been playing a lot, and outgrew both the amp and crappy guitar pretty quickly. He got a part time job and saved the cash to buy a Marshall combo amp, and told his parents he wanted a good guitar like his teacher had. That’s what motivated this insanely expensive gift purchase. This all took place Christmas 2016. I asked his dad the other day if he’s taking good care of that guitar. His dad told me he’s now got a pickup truck and hot little girlfriend. Now that he’s discovered the vajajay, the Les Paul sits in its case under his bed. The kid is always either with the girl friend, or headed out the door to go get her. Another budding musician caught in the oldest trap known to mankind.

I hope he comes back to it, but..... Snappage strikes again

Re: I'm officially done buying gibsons new anyway.

When I was in college I sold my guitar so I could buy Miss Saigon tickets. There was a certain kind of relationship involved. But now that I officially don’t care about anything but guitars, I’m much happier and own a lot of cool guitars. The moral? Don’t blame the guitar for Junior’s hormone-fluctuating interest levels. Relationships come and go. Only a guitar will love you forever.

is it any wonder that all great guitarists are either homely as sin
or total jerks

those are the only one with free time on Saturday

Re: I'm officially done buying gibsons new anyway.

Aging baby-boomer professionals with high discretionary income didn't idolize the Hamer brand like they idolize Gibson and Fender. Many of those boomers had children who were raised to idolize the same things that their parents idolize (my kids love my 80s music as much as they love their own generation's music). Hamer was just a tiny blip on the radar of iconic brands. I've owned a LOT of guitars over the past 34 years, yet I've never owned a Hamer. I've played some in shops that seemed nice, but none ever grabbed me and said "take me home!". The only guy that I can think of off the top of my head that really made a dent with the big brands and put Hamer on the map is Rick Nelson from Cheap Trick. As opposed to the countless players of Gibson, Fender, Ibanez, Jackson, Charvel, ESP etc that have been well-known over the years.

And the one brand that has really made a dent in the icons over the past 20+ years is PRS. They were known by very few in the 80s, but by the late 90s had come on very strong. I haven't seen that kind of growth against the sales of the icons in other major brands that I can think of. I feel like PRS is on the decline in terms of that prestige that their instruments once carried (selling imports under the same name will do that). But they're still a very powerful brand. Hamer might have taken some tips from Paul about how to make a dent in the big ones.

One of the greatest riffing tones in rock history was Hamer:

Re: I'm officially done buying gibsons new anyway.

Again Astro - NOT the point. for $250 or $350 - fine.

For $2500 or $3500 - that's BS pure and simple.

They’re pricing them all the way up there huh? Crazy. Just two years ago I bought my traditional for 2300. Now they want 2700 for it.

I’ve looked at the specs, it’s the same guitar except for the bridge and some inconsequential specs.

I think the guitar in the original post is a new Studio.

When I bought my explorer I bought a firebird studio originally. It had a buzz on the 2nd fret low E string.

I just took it back and chose something else. Figured I ran into a dud.

Re: I'm officially done buying gibsons new anyway.

I wouldn't even accept it on a $200-$300 dollar guitar, unless it was a formerly $1000 guitar that I found for the lower price at a pawn shop.

Really guys? I’d like to state very respectfully I junk you’re too zoomed in on this and need to look at the big picture

My les Paul has areas like this, also by the binding.

In regards to the logo etc

THATS INSANE

I’ll give you that.

But my guitar wasn’t perfect either when I got it from sweetwater. Nothing gigantic. Just tiny finish things.

Two years later they’re all beauty marks.

A natural relic Gibson is a beautiful thing.

Maybe ok I’m full of **** but 2017 and 2018 guitars just don’t have it.

Both of mine are 2016 models and they’re a slam dunk.

Re: I'm officially done buying gibsons new anyway.

Now, if you had went ahead and paid $6000+ you would have had Tom Murphy pre-eff it up for you just like that. But for the bargain price of $2000 you have to eff it yourself.

Yahtzee

I played some acoustic, never was very good. Eventually gave up on it, kids and family and work came along. I always loved guitar music tho. Got hurt, picked up a guitar in my 50s and never giving it up again. That kid will some day pick it back up, and when he does, he will be glad its a Gibson

Re: I'm officially done buying gibsons new anyway.

Yea, sure it is. Maybe you can take over QC and talk them into putting your name on the headstocks?

Maybe you can post something constructive.

I already have guitars with my name on the headstock. They are made better than Gibsons too. [emoji12]

Re: I'm officially done buying gibsons new anyway.

Here’s a brand new gold top I had in my shop to do work on. You can see orange peel on the finish on the binding and file marks on the binding/fretboard. I guess sanding takes too much time. There was blobs of solder in the control cavity too.

I was being constructive. If people make a criticism based on a particular example, thats fully ok to me. When people just rip something in general, it has no merit to me

You were being snarky. I pointed out real life expectancies with Gibson’s shoddy workmanship. You said I should put me name on the guitars.

Which of those two things don’t fit into this conversation? [emoji848]

Re: I'm officially done buying gibsons new anyway.

Had a Warmoth build finished in nitro by a former Gibson employee in Nashville (thank you Jolly for the contact that lead to that contact.) No finish problems, no flaws, no chipping,no peeling...just a pure clean finish all over including the back of the guitar. It was quite a long wait for the finish to dry properly but well worth it.

Stuff like this is just unacceptable and is why, IMO, Gibson is in the financial position it is in. If you don't care about quality control then what other parts of your business do you not care about?

Thing is, maybe you were being objective and factual. But the nonstop barrage of hate I keep reading everywhere gets old. I bet most of the stuff I read is from people that never even bought one or maybe never even held one

Elvis died from cardiac arrest. He was extremely constipated from heavy drug use. He basically strained too hard and dropped dead.

Well, he strained too hard, broke loose a plaque, which floated into a coronary artery. Which then blocked.
Which killed him.

I’ve owned a mid 60’s ES-330TD (got stolen) and an ‘81 LP Standard. Both were very nice guitars.

The real issue with Gibson is Henry. Besides being greedy, he bought several other companies and either killed or ruined their products. Like Steinberger. I’ve met Ned, and he had nothing good to say about Gibson.

Henry wants to churn out guitars as fast as possible. So they cut corners. Meanwhile he wants mucho dinero for guitars that are not any better than Epiphones.

I guess I aint that sharp when it comes down to it. People want a true perfect guitar at that high price, and they should. But then in the next breath complain about a machine making the guitar and ask why so much? Then in comes the human element to justify the high cost, and people make mistakes. You can get a computer to stamp widgets in China all day. You add in the combination of high production semi custom guitars, mistakes will occur. I just dont want to see American workers not have their jobs. As Dave would say, I do root for the home team. Sorry for the grief. And maybe I could be wrong, but the BEST Gibson is still the BEST GUITAR. The right ones are awesome, and IMO you can talk PRS and all that, Alex Lifeson was endorsing PRS and said, the Great Les Pauls sound the frickin best, because they do. You get a great one and take care of it, it may outlive you
