I'm on the (Lil) Night Train....I love that stuff!

got it for $150, plus that $50 rebate I just sent it to Vox. Was backordered to December but actually showed up yesterday.

Got about 20 minutes in on it running through my Cannabis Rex Blues Jr. as the cab and a little time through the headphone out as well.

Just a lot of fun. Crank up the gain and go nuts (at low volumes). I don't see it doing cleans really at all but that's fine. I got other stuff for that. I wanted low volume tube distortion and it's got that all day.

the headphone out is great. I used to have a Vox DA10 as my first amp and the headphone out really saved me a lot of grief. I unloaded that when I got the BJer and I've been kind of missing that functionality. Now that we're trying for a baby the headphone thing might save my ass.

I want to get a cab for it but I'm not too keen on the Lil Night Train cab even though it's affordable. Might try and build something. Or maybe buy the Vox AC4TV matching cab. I already have the AC4TV combo so they'd go well together anyways. input here is welcome.

will report more later. fun stuff so far though

here is my favorite demo video too. maybe I need a 4x12? ha

Let me be the first to congratulate you.

Re: I'm on the (Lil) Night Train....I love that stuff!

Dunno if you can do better than the Cannibis Rex, actually. An Emi Wizard 1x12 will definitely wring the most out of those 2W as well...

Re: I'm on the (Lil) Night Train....I love that stuff!

I quite liked my 15w night train and I can only assume that these 2w ones sound really sweet when pushed!

Re: I'm on the (Lil) Night Train....I love that stuff!

I scored a Night Train cab with a 12"' Celestion Greenback in it to use with my Orange TT. It's a very good sounding lightweight cab.

Re: I'm on the (Lil) Night Train....I love that stuff!

If you end up paying $100 for it, you really scored. I tried one out when they first hit the street, and it's a fun little amp. It uses a 12AX7 as a power tube, right? Yeah, it's small sounding, but it's got a really cool grindy sound. For the price of a pedal or pickup, it's a fun thing to own.

And the better the cab, the better it'll sound.

It uses an AU7 for the power amp. I'd love to hear one through my C-Rex loaded 2x12...the cab it comes paired with is a toy.

Try putting a 12AT7 in the power valve slot; I really like it!

Re: I'm on the (Lil) Night Train....I love that stuff!

I've got my valves for this now, I'll see if I can find a few minutes to try some swaps this weekend. At the moment, it sounds slightly grainy under gain, so I'm hoping one of the options I picked will smooth that out a little.

Doubt it.

That is my biggest problem w the LNT; sounds like a can of bees when you up the gain. For milder gain settings using the BB Preamp, it sounds passable.

Like I've said before, I adore the amp for headphone/practice situtations, but that's about it.

I wonder if there's a mod for getting the gain less tizzy, tho?

Re: I'm on the (Lil) Night Train....I love that stuff!

mostly I just see people doing that C19 brightness mod

Re: I'm on the (Lil) Night Train....I love that stuff!

Well I dropped the Phillips AU7 and the pair of GT 12AX7's in there this afternoon - first impressions were that everything was rather noisier than with the Chinese valves in there. That said, the whole thing seems to have cleaned up somewhat. I'm going to do a bit more swapping and see if I can pin down which of the valves is having most impact on the noise. Given that it seems far more prevalent when the gain is being adjusted, I'm suspecting it's down to the 12AX7's.

Re: I'm on the (Lil) Night Train....I love that stuff!

Very late update

Got a TRM pine cab with an Eminence Texas Heat 12" in it for my lil night train

Sweet lord does it give that lil head some big cajones! Can't wait to really crank it up

Re: I'm on the (Lil) Night Train....I love that stuff!

Thanks for the update! I am thinking of getting either a Texas Heat or the Weber CV/Duane Allman clone.

Re: I'm on the (Lil) Night Train....I love that stuff!

Back from the dead thread!

Scored a Lil' Night Train earlier this evening on a bit of a whim. I love everything about it except the broken headphone/line jack. It's a separate small board that houses the speaker out as well. Got to see if I can source one, it's an easy fix if I can get a good one.

Freaking righteous lil' beast, don't want to stop playing it. Lots of old school Joe Perry in this thing. Really gritty sounding, really surprised at the amount of usable gain before it sounds silly.

Re: I'm on the (Lil) Night Train....I love that stuff!

Make sure to do the brightness mod. It makes the amp even better! I also switched the output valve to a 12AX7...

Re: I'm on the (Lil) Night Train....I love that stuff!

kind of jonesing for the 15wt combo right now
