I'm selling everything i have

Re: I'm selling everything i have

oh and be careful if your amp has a mid knob

the blackface tone isn't really scooped, but i guess the mids are more... implied

all the way down is too little & halfway up may be teetering on too much

it's really hard to explain

You should explain your signature. Haha, it's driving me nuts.

Re: I'm selling everything i have

normally i'd get all a-holeish & say how self explanitory it is, but you're new & i like you, so i'm not gonna do that

basically everywhere i've ever played has been a hole in the wall venue that constantly gets raided by cops & invariably gets shut down a few months after it opens. 95% of the time the PA isn't even loud enough to make the vocals audible. Well, you can hear them, but not very well

and for a long time i was a total volume whore. Hence the bassman modded for more wattage than should be possible, and a 4x12 loaded with the loudest speakers available that just happen to sound amazing. During said volume whore time everyone kept telling me to get a little combo amp like a hot rod deluxe or a classic 30. I did get a hrdlx, but sold it pretty quick. Won't say it wasn't loud enough, cause it ALMOST was, but the speaker farted out like hell at the volume i needed, so that gave me a bad taste for anything below a half stack

The main argument for people trying to convince me of a combo amp was that most places have a nice PA system to mic your stuff, so even 40 watts could be overkill. I got tired of explaining the decadent venues, so i just put it in my sig

and though i don't want a half stack anymore, i still can't mic my amp. I guess i just got less punk rock over the years, back in the day nothing made me smile more than a room so filled with sound all you could hear was a white screaming buzz, hitting you like a louisville slugger to the forehead. Everyone felt that way, it was like we got posessed by the auditory chaos

but now, as long as the band fills the room, i'm happy

Re: I'm selling everything i have

Yeah, welcome to the life of a bar band. I agree completely. It should have been self explanatory..

We have our own PA (well, more like, I have the PA, the other guys own their monitors and mics) and it kicks ASS. I guess I'm just a snob but I wouldn't trust a house PA for my sound, especially stage monitoring. When I'm singing I want to hear my voice through a GOOD monitor loud and clear. I also like to be able to mix my own sound. I'm a control freak and I'm surprised frankly that the guys in the band put up with it.

And there's something to be said for only vocals through the PA. That's how we do it a lot of the time because let's face it, our stage volume is usually quite alright for a house volume (ever been asked to turn up? But I bet you've been asked to turn down), and in a small place it can sound quite fine with only vocals through the PA. And it's so much easier to set up! That's why when the guys were buying their amps I got the bass player to spring on a 400 watt 4x10" rig and the guitarist a 120 watt (solid state) amp. It's actually an excellent amp; a Trace Elliot of some sort.

This is the whole reason I went looking for a new amp to buy and have finally settled on a JTM45 type amp. My little Fender Deluxe Reverb sometimes doesn't quite cut it for unmiked gigs and I like to have a clean sound available. Seems like on the Marshalls rolling your guitar vol. back works real well.

Re: I'm selling everything i have

what is it that all you guys seem to be hearing that i don't?

A simple connection between guitar, amp & player. He's using pedals in there but they're transparent. They're doing their job and allowing the amp to sound like itself, the guitar to sound like itself, and the player to sound like himself. There's an organic, natural, "rawness" to the tone that's not overly colored or distorted or otherwise camoflaged. And he knows exactly how to work it and make it his own.

Well, perhaps not 'his own', we're talking about a clone player here. But he can sure work the gear really well. And in the end, if the clone player can nail it, and you like the player they clone, it's always fun for a quick listen. I saw an SRV tribute act last year. The guy did the whole hog, right down to the hat, the (homemade) #1 copy and all the stage maneuvers. He got it about 90% nailed, and it was fun to watch.

Re: I'm selling everything i have

what songs was he playing?

i know voodoo chile was in there but that's the only one i knew

Nothing direct, more a compendium of classic SRV licks all rolled together. so while it wasn't technically any tune, there wasn't a single lick in that whole passage that you can't find on an SRV recording or DVD. In many ways, the mark of a really accomplished clone player is when they improvise randomly in the style of the person they clone and it sounds as if it's the real guy playing freeform.

There are lots of other clips where he plays dead on SRV tunes very impressively, though. He's done his homework.

Re: I'm selling everything i have

so you'll have no problem tabbing it out for me, then :)

I'll give you guitarpro if you do

I could probably come pretty close, yeah. My problem is time. I think girlfriend will kill me if I start taking on unpaid transcription duties on top of band work and design work.

Tell ya what, if you're really interested in learning some of that stuff (as opposed to just figuring out if I can transcribe SRV licks), then pick a couple of short, choice licks from the clip and I'll whip them up. That should only waste an hour or so.

You are, of course, aware that there are several excellent 'learn to play SRV' dvds and books on the market, right? -head for any of the titles that include 'voodoo chile' and you'll be well on your way. Just stop when you start thinking about Kimonos and peacock tattoos.

Re: I'm selling everything i have

yeah i have a couple of them, but i hate instructional videos

i'll go back & pick out a couple riffs & shoot you a PM

thanks

Re: I'm selling everything i have

One very important tip too: play with one of the fatter corners of your pick. Scott Henderson mentioned it once, I tried it and it really helps give you some of Stevie's attack. It's a simple thing but it works...
