the day i picked up my cab at the shop i saw a marshall, i was being COMPLETELY cloes-minded about marshall's saying the the nomad is the one that i want. that was a mistake, christian you were right a marshall's right for me. it was a jcm 2210, it was beautiful at low volume's as well. now my mom won't let me return the nomad and get the marshall! i'm angry, i know everyone says use what you got but that thing was in it's own realm :) . but i did get a cool kinks tone with my nomad
what do you guys think?

If you just bought it, why not return it?

I'd say bring your head, cab, and axe down and test 'em out.

Judge them by their depravities; virtues can be faked :laugh2:

Re: i'm sooooo angry

idk man, you seem like you didnt know what you wanted in the first place. If you are droppin that kind of cash, you need to try out a fair amount of amps, even if you think you have already found "the one"

Re: i'm sooooo angry

Well if you can't return it , you can't return it. Moot point.

But Mesa and Marshall are two completely different animals..especially a Nomad vs. a 2210.

Nomad rarely gets much love from the MESA community, and the 2210/2205 is prolly (IMO) the best higher gain amp Marshall made (not a fan of Jubilees and later marshalls really in the general sense).

Talk it out with your folks and explain to them, admit you made a snap/dumb decision, based on your needs and also explain to them that the value of the 2210 will go UP over the years and the Nomad is gonna go down. Investment potential may sway them ;)

Re: i'm sooooo angry

I have used NOMADS

YOU NEED TO TALK TO YOUR MOM. I think she wants you to learn a lesson in decision making and sticking by choices etc etc

So appeal to her this way - tell her, I wasn't aware of my options and not nearly as aware of how music works as a business. I am part of a Forum where I did some research and my peers, some more knowledgeable than me alerted me to a couple of MAJOR factors.

1) Brand name - Marshall, ESP the JCM800 is an international known NAME AND MODEL, which, should I get hired in any professional capacity, show that I use top notch gear. (MESA is great too, I know, but NOT the Nomad).

2) Professional Situations - Many producers and live acts will prefer the sound, balance, and the way a 2210 sits in the mix. TRUST ME ON THIS ONE. Many producers will ask you to bring something else OR rent you something else. Marshall IS the sound of ROCK, like it or not. They record AMAZINGLY.

Whether or not you are paid, you never know what happens. Always act as IF!

3) Value. I am sure your mom would love to see you use your money wisely. It is far more likely the Nomad will continue to diminish in value given the saturation (ironic word) or tube amps on the market. JCM800s from the 80s are classics, and actually continue to go up in value. I am sure she is aware of the collectible and vintage marketplaces.

4) Sound. As far as sound, the Nomad is very midrange-y, and Ch 3 is over saturated, many agree. The sound is too thick and eats up most mixes, even live. While the clean sound is lauded by many, I think people on this forum will sacrifice versatility for great tone.

I am sure you chose the Nomad for many reasons, versatility being one of the main ones. That being said, you will find the 2210 to not only be a great piece and great investment, but the beginning of a great rock n roll journey.

Re: i'm sooooo angry

Tell your mom it's your gear, your money, and ultimately your decision. You don't tell her what color to dye her hair.

Re: i'm sooooo angry

they are all great ideas i did try to talk to her, all she does gets angry and just says "nope, i'm not even going to talk with you". what right do you have to dictate what kind of gear i get when you know hardly anything about guitars, resale value or tone. i hate it when she's close-minded like this

Re: i'm sooooo angry

If your mom says no... I assume you are in a situation where you need to get your mom's permission... so you are keeping the Nomad...

First thing you need to do is stop being "sooooo angry"... it's not good for you, and if your mom knows how angry you are, she will not listen to you at all... trust me.

If I were you, I would make the best of the situation and learn to use the Nomad and make it sound as good as you can. Someday, you will have the resources to buy the Marshall (or whatever) you want. At that point you can sell the Nomad to some kid that can't afford any better, or if you have learned to make it sound half-way good - keep it as a backup rig.

Re: i'm sooooo angry

If you paid for it yourself, then do what you want. If your parents bought it for you, then be grateful you got anything.

Re: i'm sooooo angry

I really think gear obsession is pretty useless when it comes to making good tunes. If you really are going to have to keep it get the best out of it and make "good" songs. It really is the most important thing because the only people who obsess about tone is us nerds who hang out in places like this. :)

Although there is some really good advice in this thread so you might give it a day or two and try and rationalize with mom.

Re: i'm sooooo angry

Inform your mom that this isn't some trivial, silly matter where you'll learn a valuable lesson and be grateful for her guidance later.

Let her know that, despite the fact that she be irritated with you now, the opportunity you could miss out on while she's "teaching you a lesson" is going to continue to have an adverse effect on you long after she's forgotten about it.

Ask your mom what she would think if this situation was seven years ago instead of now, and if the purchase in question had been shares in Ebay stock instead of an amp. So the broker changed his mind and pushed the Ebay stock after she had already invested in porkbellies - the nerve! - now she's mad and refuses to listen to him. Fast forward seven years later and here she is, driving the same mini van to the same demeaning job, complete with unfair wages, coworkers who ask her tits how their weekend was every Monday morning and a glass ceiling so close over her head that her breath is fogging it up.

Point out that if she hadn't decided to "teach her broker a lesson" seven years earlier by not listening to him, she'd be sunbathing on the deck of a yacht off the western coast of Tahiti right now sipping Mai Tais through a platinum straw while Hernando the Master Masseuse rubs her down with lotion squeezed from baby seals.

Or, just get your dad to smack some sense into her. Moms need that sometimes.

The job analogy doesn't apply.

What's the life changing effect of having a Boogie instead of a Marshall gonna be?

A sense of humor must develop later in life for Australian youth. Don't worry, lad. One day yours will grow in. :)

PS - The analogy isn't between jobs, my friend. It's between investments.

The way you wrote your posts were far from humorous. Definitely some serious content.

I've never been good with jokes, anyway. ;)

Okay, so it's about investments. What's the life changing effect of having a Boogie instead of a Marshall gonna be?

Hah, well maybe not humorous to you, but at least I can amuse myself. I have a bit of a dark sense of humor, though.

Actually if you re-read his story, it's the inverse - a Marshall instead of a Boogie... and then, if you go back and re-read all the replies, you'll see that the general consensus is that the Marshall (JCM 2210) is a much wiser investment than the particular Boogie he has (a Nomad) in terms of quality and appreciation over time.

So, as we walk through this, I then compared the Marshall to Ebay stock and the Nomad to porkbellies, citing his mom's refusal to listen to him since he changed his mind, despite the fact that he now wishes to take a much wiser course of action.

I threw in the yacht and the spousal abuse for flavor.

Re: i'm sooooo angry

The bad working conditions are a teeeeeny bit more severe than the money lost outta the amps, aren't they? I agree with you, he should exchange the amps. But it ain't life changing.

I thought you were going for the whole 'broken relationship' thing. (lol)

That depends entirely on how long he would be holding onto the Marshall, it's condition, and market fluctuation. :D
