Now that that's over, I hate it when an old pedal that's still being made is hyped as the greatest thing in the world, everybody raves about it, and the manufacturer promotes it as "the original, still the same great sound after twenty-eight years" or whatever. Then it becomes known that older versions were different in some meaningful way, are highly sought after, collector prices, etc. Then the mfg. comes out with a reissue of the original, which is now required in order to get that great old, original sound from twenty-eight years ago.

You guys in the States actually have it pretty sweet.
Here in Australia, a Fender custom shop guitar sells for $5,500.
and beleive me, they are NOT the good ones.
There used to be an urban myth (urban truth??) about how the guitars were sent out from the Fender and Gibson factories.

I have seen binding peeling from US custom Gibson Les Pauls, I picked up a custom shop fender and nearly cut my hand on the sharp fret ends, pickups with 2 mounting screws in the ring, input jacks falling out of Telecasters, seriously warped and bent necks on both Fender and Gibson guitars (top of the line $5k plus guitars) unfortunately the list goes on and on. and they were all brand new guitars. We have some real horror stories here in OZ, and we are far enough away for the big companies to not give a flying fjuck

A story...

a few years ago an aquantance bought a Gretch White Falcon Australian price $7,800.00 (yep thats right $7,800.00 Aussie bucks) after a year or so, he really wanted to strip the paint off and take it back to a natural timber finish.
So far so good,
Took all the white paint off, no problems...
Got to the neck pocket, and noticed that there was an awful lot of what appeared to be car bog (filler) around the loose looking joint.
Dug all of this out, and noticed severe movement in the neck.
on further investigation it was found that the neck was held in place with a 4 inch nail.

really..

From the Gretch Factory, out to Australia... far far on the other side of the world...where no one ever returns guitars, because they would have to mortgage their house to do so.

Here in Australia if we want a really good production guitar we buy PRS
next on the list are the Japanese Fenders

and thats it..


or we get someone like me to make you one..


so really,


you are getting the cream of what is made, spare a thought for the rest of us....

Sometimes a $1,950 guitar is ten times better than an $1,100 guitar, so you might.

That sucks ass. You guys should leverage the political power of Australian celebrities, such as Nik Kidman, Russell Crowe, Naomi Watts, etc., to address the plight of Aussie guitarists. This is a human rights issue.

Yeah, me too. I mean, if bad guitars don't show up in US stores, do they really exist? It's kind of like, if a tree falls in a forest, and it lands on a mime, does anyone care? (I wish I could remember where I heard that, so I could give credit.)

we are VERY used to it...

and good in a perverted sort of way, it got me into making guitars. because I could not buy a decent guitar for love or money in the stores..

Pete - materials aside, how do you rate the build quality of current korean-manufactured elec guitars?
and is that for real about the nail?! how did it sound before he started stripping it? there'd have to be something wrong for me to want to strip a new gretsch

I'll second that. The prices are execrable. And for every 20 imports or mid-low end guitars you might have one that's a bit higher up, quality not guaranteed. What Pete forgot to mention is that the no-so-good $5k CS Fender often lives in a glass case, like a fetish/wank inducing object.

I go to Allan's fairly regularly just to look at things and sometimes play the acoustic guitars. The last few times I went there was the same BFG Les Paul (one of the Gary Moore ones, I think) on a rack, I looked at it closely and noticed severe splintering of the maple top where it meets the neck on the cutaway side, like the machine chewed it up. No joke.

I'm reluctant to buy a new electric guitar, though I'd like/need one, because it's hard to get the specs I want in the $1000-$2000 price range. I'd be compelled to fork out and even that would be no guarantee for a good guitar. There's little locally made variety within the price range - Cole Clark make a Strat and T-style as well as their own design, and the Maton Mastersound, while nice, ain't my thing: 21 frets, narrow neck, not enough switcheroo, no trem option. A Jap made Ibanez, which is more consistent generally, is going to be close to $2k up.

Incidentally, classical guitar luthierie is very good in Australia, with makers like Greg Smallman, Jim Redgate, the Hancocks, Simon Marty, Richard Howell, Zbigniew Gnatek etc. making some choice guitars favoured by pro players.

I own many high-end guitars. Ten Les Pauls, six Martins, a Taylor, 15 G&Ls--all really good stuff.

But you know, some of my most prized guitars are the ones that I found for less than $200.

I freely admit to being a serious guitar snob, yet I still cherish the obscure finds that turned out to be very special guitars.
