I'm trying to select a new amp.

What are your thoughts? I have a Blackstar HT-20 that I like, but I'm looking at getting something with different flavor. The 2 amps I've been looking at are the Orange Dark Terror, and the 50w EVH 5150 III. If I got the dark terror I would be willing to get an EQ pedal if needed too. The EVH 5150 III is almost twice the price, and I'm concerned that I wouldn't be able to pull off anything doom-ish due to it's clarity. Thoughts? I also considered the AMT O2 pedal but I'm looking for a Thunderverb style Orange voicing if that's what I choose (just because I'm a metal player that likes a lot of gain).

If you're looking at new EVH 5150 III, and you want a Thunderverb tone, why aren't you looking at used Thunderverbs?

I actually have a friend who bought a Thunderverb and almost never uses it... PM me if you want me to bug him about a price.

I mean't if I were to go with the Orange brand I'd want something with a Thunderverb voicing. I'm not 100% set on an Orange tone. The Dark Terror preamp voicing is based off of the Thunderverb preamp voicing.

Re: I'm trying to select a new amp.

I mean I get that but you're talking about either getting one company's 15w practice / recording amp and another company's 100w stage / stadium amp.

I was just thinking you could go apples to apples and get best of both worlds... a 100w stage / stadium amp that can be cut down to 30w and actually is the amp one of the two you're considering is based on?

I dunno just throwin ideas out there. This is one of those situations where you're comparing two high-quality pieces of gear and nobody's gona be able to tell you which one YOU like better, except for you man ;)

At the worst, you have a third option on the table. Why not at least ask? No one cares if you say, "No, thanks." There's only an upside in this deal.

Good point. I also should have specified that I was thinking the 50w 5150 III.

Re: I'm trying to select a new amp.

I think I will end up buying the 5150 III. I can always find a way to get a looser tone out of it.

Re: I'm trying to select a new amp.

Every day I think about buying a 50 watt 5150 III half stack. I don't "need" one by any means, but I sure as hell want one.

Re: I'm trying to select a new amp.

I have a thunderverb 50. if you want that tone, a 5150 is a completely different amp and you definitely will not be able to finesse that type of tone out. sure you could use it as a platform and try a hundred pedals to get there...

there are amps similarly voiced to a thunderverb 50 and a 5150 is not even close...

I would recommend Laney AOR 100 and a pro amp specialist to tune it up, but I would need to know more about your rig and setup and what music you dig etc etc

I'm not looking for something with the thunderverb tone necessarily, I'm more looking for something that sounds different than my Blackstar (preferably with more gain). I love the recorded tone of the 5150 III and I'm pretty sure it's the one. I don't need it to sound like a thunderverb or any orange for that matter, I just need some sag in the bass sometimes. I think I could get the sag I need out of the 5150 III.

Re: I'm trying to select a new amp.

I've played both amps but for my taste the DT won out, I just felt the DT was capable of some grainier tones, the clean channel on the 5150 III though is uber bad ass.....

I think I would have a hard time getting rid of the DT for anything but a mini recto....unless bogner comes out with a 15 watt uberschall that is.....

Re: I'm trying to select a new amp.

If you're not afraid of the watts though pick up that 50 watt Pittbull head in the VHT thread, really amazing amp, the 45 combo is my favorite amp of all time....if I ever go back to playing with a band again I'll be buying another one....
