Re: improv help

Start slow- try playing only one note every few measures. Develop a few key phrases that you can sprinkle in here and there.

I learned by playing along with BB King et al. songs. Not so much trying to play what they played. More trying to add something that complimented what they were playing.

Re: improv help

What helped me break out of pentatonic patterns was learning to see the notes from arpeggios (maj, min, maj7, min7, dom7, dim) all over the fretboard. Rather than sticking in one pattern/scale over the progression, you can use these arpeggios to only hit chord tones for each new chord as it comes up. Once you're comfortable with finding the notes you can start adding in non-chord tones to make your solo take on certain flavours . . . like adding the 3rd and b5 to a minor arpeggio to make it sound bluesy, or hammering on to the 2, 4 and 6 from a major arpeggio to get that Hendrix chord-melody kinda thing going on.

Re: improv help

Whatever style(s) of music you currently listen to, look beyond that. African, Arabic, Indian and other traditions use different modes and scales. Immerse yourself in some of that for a while. Its influence should permeate through.

Standard study references: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Allan Holdsworth, Frank Zappa, _________________ (fill in the blank).
