In praise of the Eminence Legend V12…

So I was in a situation where I wanted a speaker with a Vintage 30 voicing but less of the harshness and fizz that that entails. And, yes, mine are broken in, to me it’s just an inherent part of the voicing that does relax over time but never goes away. My favorite speaker is the Celestion G12-65, but it can sound very dark and bloated in the low-mids with a lot of high gain modern amplifiers.
I must have listened to dozens of clips of different models that were supposed to be “corrected” vintage 30’s. I didn’t like any of them. Or if I did, I heard a clip comparing it to a vintage 30 and it was effectively a worse speaker. One stood out though, which I was surprised because it was old speaker essentially marketed as a budget model, and that was the Eminence V12. I decided to try them, seeing how cheap they are, and I have been more than happy with how they’ve sounded with every amp I’ve played them with. Clear and focused and forward enough to cut through, but not harsh. And they aren’t even close to broken in. Do they sound like a Vintage 30? Not really. I actually think they kind of remind of a Vintage 30 with everything shifted a little down to the G12-65, but with a clearer treble than either. I’m no speaker expert, but they seemed very well constructed. I can’t wait to hear them broken in.

eminence makes some great speakers. had a v128 a while ago and liked it. glad you found something that works for you!

I had one years ago and didn't like it at first cuz I hadn't got to hear many recorded clips of them.... At first I was thinking it was a little... or maybe kinda a lot... lacking in top end, I was expecting some sizzle. I had a small closed back 112 and was using a DSL 50 watt head and I needed a decent but not expensive speaker to handle the power.
it sounded great when playing 80s metal riffs but I thought it needed some more top end for the ambient stuff, pop rock, bl00z and 60s-70s rock I was wanting too.
If I could go back I think I would like that speaker more than when I first made my assessment. I've heard many worse speakers in the mean time.

I find if your V30s are too new or "Harsh" -rolling off above 6k and taming 200-800 hz is the key until the speakers mature and mellow

Also -gassing in the 2-3k range is V30 essential IMO.

I had good experience with WGS Retro 30 (brighter) and the WGS Veteran 30 (smoother) version of the Vintage 30. Just sayin'.
