Incoming NCD

So a new GC opened up in my area about a year ago and I still hadn't been there, mostly since I've had no real reason to be in that area. But since I was passing right by it on my way from school to work today, I thought I'd stop in and check out the used selection.

I was pretty impressed - they had a lot of nice used gear for nice prices. A Mesa DC-5 head for $500, a Sound City 120 L (6 EL34s!!!) for a grand, and a EVH III (100W, the one with separate eq for each channel) for $1100. I was really interested in the EVH, but it was way too stiff for my liking.

But the crown jewel was an Avatar 4x12 for $275. I was told it has 2 V30s and two Greenbacks. I could probably sell just the speakers and make a little money. It seems like an awesome cab, but I didn't get the chance to try it out with an amp I liked. It should sound awesome with my Egnater though, so I'm looking forward to that. I'm going back to pick it up in about a week and a half, I just have to wait for the police hold to finish and then a few more days until my next paycheck comes in.

Check it:

Now I have 3 cabs. But everyone needs a 4x12, right? Ah well, I'll compare all three of my cabs and if one isn't quite as good as the others I'll sell it off. I'm just happy I got a killer deal. Apparently these are over $700 new, so woohoo.

Re: Incoming NCD

nice! good price. now u need another for the PROPER ful lstack since you ONLY have a half stack

Re: Incoming NCD

Congrats!

Which 4x12 is it, Traditional (Fender knock off), Vintage (Marshall 1960B knock off), Contemporary (Orange knock off), or Signature? EDIT: Nevermind, the pic wasn't showing for some reason when I posted this question. Nice looking Contemporary you have there!

I have a Vintage 4x12 with V30s in it that I'm very happy with. It has a better thump to it than my Splawn 4x12, which is loaded with Eminence Governor and Man O War speakers, and nicely compliments my Marshall 1960A loaded with Brit G12T75s when I run them together.

Avatar makes some great stuff. I ordered a custom closed back "Signature" style 2x12 w/ V30's from them last year for my Mesa Single Recto and it sounds amazing.

Re: Incoming NCD

awesome. leave the speakers in.

they'll sound great together in an x pattern.

Re: Incoming NCD

X pattern is going to be a more homogenous sound where the different speakers are blended a bit better than a top/bottom pattern which will be blasting one sound at your face and a completely different sound at your knees (in the case of a slant cab for example)

Re: Incoming NCD

Wow...275 for a loaded 4x12 (with good speakers).
Yeah.....the X-Pattern thing...it is how I have always layed-out my 4x12's...but who knows. I have never had 2 identical, loaded, 4x12 to A/B and listen for a difference.
I have always just figured the X provides a "better" blending of the 2 speakers. :dunno:

Boy...say what you will about GC...they are what they are...but I have seen LOTS of good deals on their Used Gear.
Nice Score my friend.....Dave builds a good product.:bigthumb:

Re: Incoming NCD

Having the greenbacks up top and the vintage 30s on the bottom is a killer trick. Same thing Dave Friedman does with his cabs. I'd leave it alone. The greenbacks have lower sensitivity and work well up top with the louder vintage 30s down low.

Re: Incoming NCD

The X pattern will give you a more homogenous sound playing live, but if you use it for recording, it gives you just a little bit more leeway in micing positions if you do a top/bottom or side/side. Also, if you wire them for stereo, again it can give you more options. You could still wire it stereo in an X, depending on what you like I guess.

Re: Incoming NCD

That's nice! I bought a vintage style 1x12 from them recently and I am pretty happy with it. Very good quality for the price.

Re: Incoming NCD

Why is it that buying something new always seems to aggravate my GAS even more? I picked up the Avatar today and just for ****s and giggles I tried it with the early 90's Dual Rectifier they had there. It may have been a pre-500, I'm not sure. But holy hell that Mesa and my Avatar sounded awesome together. I'm considering picking up the Mesa... I mean at $1000 it's not a bad deal at all.

Did those amps change much over the years.?
I guess all builders implement some Changes/Features/Conveniences.....but were they basically the same amp for most of the revisions.?
BTW...what speakers are in that cab.?

Re: Incoming NCD

No idea as to what changes were made, but I know there were at least some. I do know that pre-500 Dual Rectifiers are much more valuable than your average DR - only a few years ago they were selling for around 2K-2300.

I was told the cab has two V30's and two Greenbacks, but I'm going to check tonight.

You are an inspiration.
