I am doing some basic maintenance this morning I thought some of you amp geeks would like to peek over my shoulder.

What sort of maintenance do you need to do on a solid state amp?

Pots would need cleaned/lubed for one thing.

Exactly it doesn't get played as much as I would like. I use the Marshall for the band and for home practice it is usually the Classic 20 or the Excelsior. The pots were a bit scratchy when I got the amp now they right out need to be cleaned. It is the filthiest I have ever let an amp get.

The JC-120, with the proper pedal, is still one of the best metal amps ever made.

My Chandler Tube Driver is what I used in my thrash days. I was playing it with my DOD 250 when I noticed it needed to be cleaned. The DOD 250 plays great with SS amps.

When I was a kid, my buddy used a homemade RadioShack rat clone into one. This was like '82. He didn't Really like it, but it was brootal before anyone big was doing brootal.

The distortion on JC 120 from the 80's was nasty, but Adrian Belew worked it. The distortion on the new ones sounds great. Roland is rugged, dependable stuff. Wish I still had mine - had the best clean sounds.

Both Adrian and Robert Fripp made the most of that amp. But I think the trick was not trying to emulate traditional sounds.

i swear a big part of the issue with the distortion is the stock speakers. they sound great clean with the chorus but get harsh with dirt

Love those amps -I had a buddy that used a JC120 religiously and he had the best clean tone ever I'd heard to that point, but then he'd get to a dirty part and it was comical at times.

I have always used mine with a closed cab. I had my combo sitting on a 4x12 with vintage Celestion G12H Blackbacks and now I have the head on a 2x12 with Eminence Wheelhouse speakers. I have NEVER had a problem getting a great high gain sound out of the amp or any distorted tone. The onboard distortion takes a while to dial in a tone. However, the amp is such a great pedal platform it will take on the characteristics of whatever stomp you plug into it. When I first got it and played it with the Chandler Tube Driver the band in the next rehearsal room knocked on the door because they thought I got a new Marshall stack.

Agreed-

I first tried a JC when I was 13, practicing with my drummer friend- in his step fathers barn.

The built in "distortion" sounded ... not too good, to my ears. Neither did the distortion on the new, smaller Jazz Chorus models.

I guess it's a question of taste. To me it sounded rattly, un-traditional; yet "cool" in its original way., Very unlike other amplifier's OD.
